Film evaluation

The Light of the White Tower is very clever, which truly reflects the extremely unpredictable fate, and it is impossible to assert that everything will always be so perfectly balanced. But it does show that middle-aged life is both comfortable and disappointing. When the audience realizes all kinds of intangible and complicated connections, with the past, with the people on their own life track, and with the place they call home, these connections always make them feel a little comfort.

Zhang Lv, the director, has developed a subtle network of relationships around Gu, the protagonist of the film, with a light posture that is almost floating, which is rare in the cinema. Light of the White Pagoda is not about the huge shadow left behind a person, but a collection of many small shadows, which constitute the touching and tragic complexity of life.
