In 2003, Hangzhou Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government began to fully protect Xixi Wetland. In 2005, Xixi Wetland was completed and officially opened, and was approved by the State Forestry Administration as the first national wetland park. In 2006, Xixi Wetland started the second phase of comprehensive protection project.

In 2007, the second phase of Xixi Wetland was opened, and the third phase of Xixi Wetland started construction. In September 2008, Xixi Wetland Comprehensive Protection Project was opened for three periods.

Xixi National Wetland Park is located in the west of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, only 6 kilometers away from Wulinmen, the main city of Hangzhou, and 5 kilometers away from West Lake.

Xixi National Wetland Park has a total area of about 1 1.5 square kilometers, which is divided into eastern wetland ecological protection and cultivation area, central wetland ecological tourism and leisure area and western wetland ecological landscape enclosure area.
