A lone boat was bumping on the rough sea. The story took place in the middle of19th century. Born in the Victorian era, Ida, a British aristocrat, set out from Scotland with her 9-year-old daughter Flora, carrying grand piano and clothes, and married Stuart, a British colonist who managed a plantation in New Zealand.
When the boat arrived at the seaside, Stuart, who greeted Ada's mother and daughter in the sea breeze, directed the aborigines to carry luggage. Because the road is muddy and long, the fiance who met Ida for the first time decided to abandon the heavy piano and only take the luggage home. Ada, who suffers from aphasia, asked his daughter Flora to repeatedly beg Stuart through sign language, but they were all rejected. Ida looked at the piano, which was the only way for her to express her feelings, but she was mercilessly abandoned on the beach.
On a stormy day, Ida and Stewart held a simple wedding in the jungle. In a loud thunder, Ada seemed to see the tragic scene of her beloved ex-husband being struck by lightning. After taking the wedding photos, Ada tore off the wedding dress soaked by rain, walked to the window gloomily, stared out of the window, thinking about the piano lying on the beach. Ada's ex-husband is a composer, and the husband and wife love each other. One day, when the husband and wife were singing in the forest in the Pyrenees, a thunderstorm suddenly started. Ida witnessed Dave being struck by lightning, and suddenly became speechless with fright.
Ida still lives in the same room with her daughter Flora after marriage, and has no close relationship with Stuart. She was obsessed with her beloved piano. When her husband was on a business trip, she took Flora to find real estate manager Binns. This rude man with no education once went to the shore with Stuart to meet Ada and his mother. He is very close to the indigenous Maori. Ida asked him to help bring back the piano, but she was rejected at first. But under Ada's repeated entreaties, he accompanied his mother and daughter to the beach. Ida was ecstatic when she saw her beloved thing again. She played selflessly and lost herself in the wonderful sound of the piano. Flora danced by the sea to the accompaniment of music. Binns saw a sweet smile on Ada's face for the first time. Although he didn't understand why, he was deeply moved by what he saw.
Binns offered Stuart a piece of his land in exchange for the piano thrown on the beach. Stuart was overjoyed at the strange deal. Binns asked Ada to teach him to play the piano, and Stewart agreed. Ida was furious with her husband for trading with outsiders with his beloved things, but after all, she gave herself a chance to touch the piano again and agreed.
Since then, Ida has taken Flora to Binns' house to play the piano every day. To Ada's surprise, Binns only wanted to hear her play the piano, but had no intention of learning it. He sat quietly, as if enjoying Ida's melodious piano, and seemed to find comfort in his heart. One day, he suggested that if Ida was allowed to touch her body in every piano lesson, he would give her a piano key, that is to say, Ida would eventually redeem her piano. Ida agreed. In the evening, Binns slowly took off his clothes, walked naked to the piano, and carefully wiped the piano that Ada played during the day with his clothes.
Stuart came to Ada's bedroom one night and tried to kiss her, but she was refused. After the piano lesson began, the husband found that his wife's mood was getting better and better, and thought that a normal husband and wife life might come soon.
Whenever Ida gives Binns a lesson, Flora is always turned away. One day, she was tired of playing outside and wanted to find her mother, but the door was closed and the piano in the room was gone. She saw her mother and Binns lying in bed through the crack of the door. This time, Ida won ten keys.
There was a party in the village and Flora played a lovely little angel. The whole village gets together to play. Someone coaxed Binns to play the piano, but he ignored it. He sat alone and watched Bluebeard's story performance. He got up and left when he saw Stuart and Ida having sex hand in hand. The play on the stage was vivid. When Bluebeard raised his axe to kill the bride, the Maori under the stage believed it and rushed to the stage angrily. Suddenly, there was chaos on stage and off stage.
The next day, a group of Maori shouted to take the piano to Stuart's house. He was very surprised and thought Binns had violated their agreement, so he hurried to Binns. Binns told him with a sad face that this was his gift to Ada and had nothing to do with the land transaction.
Although the piano returned to her side, when she played a few songs alone, she suddenly turned around and found that there was no one behind her. When Stuart came in, she stopped playing the piano and walked out of the room silently, wandering in the yard. She felt an indescribable emptiness and loss. After much hesitation, she decided to go to Binns. Daughter Flora also wanted to go, but Ada refused and made her cry. At this moment, Stuart happened to pass by and asked where Ada had gone. Flora said she went to hell. At first, he heard from his daughter that Ada was giving Binns a piano lesson. At this time, he became suspicious and went straight to Binns' cabin.
Ida stood in front of Binns, who looked haggard. Binns said that he took the piano away because he didn't want Ada to have the trouble of selling himself for the piano. He said he loved Ada very much. If Ida looks down on him and doesn't have enough feelings for him, please ask her to leave at once. Ida was silent at first, but later she couldn't help herself. She threw herself into Binns' arms almost crazily, and they kissed and caressed warmly. Stuart, who arrived in a hurry, just saw this scene from the gap in the wooden house outside, but he didn't have an attack.
That night, Ida smiled and played happily with her daughter in the bedroom.
A few days later, Ada lifted her long skirt lightly and walked quickly on the forest path leading to Binns' cabin. Suddenly, she found the murderous Stuart rushing to stop the way. Stuart pushed Ada to the ground and tried to force her to submit, but Ada struggled to break free. Flora ran over and shouted, "Mom, they are fiddling with your piano!" " "Indeed, a group of Maori wantonly slapped and pressed Ada's piano. When Ida was taken home by her husband, Stuart boarded up her window and ordered her not to go out.
That night, Ida woke up from her sleep, went into her husband's bedroom and gently stroked Stuart. But when her husband wanted to make out with her, she turned him down again. It has been like this for several nights in a row. The husband thought that IDA had changed her mind, so he took off the sealing plate on the window. Ida is free again.
Early this morning, Stuart went to the forest farm with an axe. When Ida saw that her husband had gone away, she took a key from the piano and wrote "George, my heart belongs to you" on the key. Wrap it in a white silk scarf and give it to your daughter. Let her give it to Binns. Flora accepted the task with great unhappiness. On the way, it suddenly occurred to her that she should tell Stuart, so she turned and went straight to the forest farm. Stuart opened the bag, saw the love words written on it, picked up the axe, dragged his daughter and ran home without looking back. He was an axe at the piano, then grabbed Ada and asked her why she was so heartless. At this time, it is raining cats and dogs outside. He dragged his wife out of the door and cut off her right index finger with an axe. He wrapped his broken finger in a silk scarf and shouted at the crying Flora to give it to Binns. Binns' heart ached at the sight of his broken finger, and so did his wrinkled face.
Stuart looked at Ada in a coma and felt guilty. Suddenly, he saw his wife's lips moving as if to say something. So he leaned forward and held his breath.
Late at night, Stuart came to Binns' house with a shotgun and a lantern. He insulted Binns after he woke him up with a gun. He asked Binns if he had heard Ada's speech. Binns said no, Stuart said he regretted punishing Ada so cruelly, and told Binns that he seemed to hear Ada say something. She said, "Let me go ... Binns will get me out of here ..." Stewart decided to help them.
On the boat by the sea, Ida, Flora and Binns are ready to return to their hometown of Scotland. Shortly after the ship set sail, Ida asked to throw the piano into the sea. Binns didn't understand what this meant, but he still ordered it. The Maori untied the rope that fixed the piano and the piano slowly sank into the water. Suddenly Ada put her foot into the long rope attached to the piano, so she was dragged into the sea by the piano. When the piano partner and Ada slowly sank to the bottom of the sea, Ada got rid of the leather boots wrapped in ropes and surfaced again, and was rescued by the Maori.
Ida and Binns started a new life. Ida is doing exercises to restore her speaking ability. Binns gave her a silver finger. In this way, she played the piano happily again. In the silent night, Ada still vaguely saw the piano sinking into the sea. ...

The film was directed by Jane Camborn, a famous New Zealand female directors, and won many awards. 1993 won the Palme d 'Or Award at Cannes Film Festival, France, and then the American Film Critics Association Award. Although she was defeated by Schindler's List in the Oscar competition, she won the best actress award. Previously, Holly Hunt won the Best Actress Award at Cannes Film Festival. Anna paquin, a child star who plays Flora, won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress with 1994.
It is reasonable for this film to win many awards. When competing for the Palme d 'Or with the China film Farewell My Concubine at Cannes Film Festival, all the judges watched the film together for the third time. At the end of the screening, the hall was silent for four minutes, and all the judges were once again shocked by the powerful artistic penetration of the film, so they had to make a choice and win the prize as the best film together with Farewell My Concubine. This is the first time in the history of Cannes Film Festival.
Piano Lesson tells a love story of the last century in an unpretentious style. The film has no ups and downs, no sense lens, but it has shocked the hearts of every audience.
Ada, the heroine, lived in the19th century, but her thoughts have already surpassed that era. She began to learn to play the piano at the age of five or six, and later became an opera singer. Her husband is a composer, and her life seems to be accompanied by music. After her husband died, although she became speechless, her thoughts seemed to be more detached. There are only two things in Ada's life that she can't give up: one is her daughter Flora, and the other is the piano she communicates with the outside world. Married to New Zealand at her father's instigation, her new husband asked her to abandon the piano that she couldn't give up as soon as she met, because Stewart thought it was a burden. As a result, the couple couldn't communicate from the moment they met. This piano is the only one that can communicate with Ida's heart. Binns is an illiterate clown who knows nothing about music, but seeing the happy scene of Ada's mother and daughter on the beach, he seems to realize the magical power of the piano. The piano lesson agreement he reached with Stewart actually promoted his communication with Adaline and Meat. In the flowing sound of the piano, two lonely hearts produced irresistible love. This kind of emotion goes far beyond the secular prejudice of money family. In order not to make Ada feel guilty about the key transaction, Binns gave the piano and the land to his sweetheart. After Ida was released from house arrest, she immediately flew to Binns' love nest. At this time, she even ignored her daughter's advice. In a coma with painful fingers, she actually spoke, and the first sentence was to fly away with Binns. When the couple returned to their hometown in Scotland, she asked Binns to push the piano into the sea when it endangered the safety of navigation. Because at this time Ada has something more precious than the piano-love. When the piano slowly entered the sea, Ada suddenly put her foot into the rope, and the idea of surviving with her beloved piano flashed through her mind, because the piano is too important in her life after all. So she was dragged into the sea and sank to the bottom of the sea. Perhaps it was the cool sea water that made her realize that the past was over and life was still wonderful, so she broke free from the shackles of the piano rope and floated to the sunny sea. At this time, the piano has become a symbol, that is, the symbol of Ida's previous life, and has been buried in the grave at the bottom of the sea. The director's metaphor here is very clear. This piano, which was shipped from Ada's old life, has experienced the baptism of sea turbulence and jungle storm in New Zealand, and the end of life has come. Ida is going to start a new happy life, and there will be another new piano to accompany her in the future. Although she will still think of the old piano buried at the bottom of the sea in the new piano sound, it has become a distant past.
The powerful shock of this film also comes from the great contrast between the lovers' cultural and social backgrounds. Ida comes from a noble family, and Binns is a tattooed barbarian in the colonial jungle in a civilized and superior society. If the love story between Ada and Binns takes place in London, it's impossible. Two very different men and women are going to get married, but Stuart, whose family appearance and cultural accomplishment are closer to Ida, is rejected. As some western film critics have said, it is only caused by * * *, which I think is too biased. Binns was able to win Ada's pains because he was the only one who could understand Ada's heart and communicate with him in this wild land. He is rough and cold in appearance, but delicate and kind in heart. On the beach by the sea, the deadpan clown felt sympathy and admiration when he witnessed that a disabled person could get such great happiness from the piano. He wants to use the land he has earned for many years in exchange for the opportunity to get close to this Sargam. Although alert and observant Ada can't speak, he can't understand the young man's intentions. In piano class, Binns is close to his admirer and can't restrain his inner impulse. He endured emotional torture and pain and didn't want to bully the beautiful and holy Ida in his mind. How can a grateful Ada be indifferent to such a kind person? Of course, I won't refuse his caress and kiss. When he found that Ada was in love with him, he was naturally overjoyed. He was in great pain when he learned that Ida's finger had been amputated. When he could fly away with Ida, he resolutely abandoned everything. For a person who cares so much about his happiness, it is natural for Ida to be congenial to him.
Although Stewart is nominally Ada's husband and he loves his wife, he still doesn't know Ada's heart, let alone communicate with him, so the marriage can only end in failure.
In this poetic and romantic film, director Jane Camborn tells us an unforgettable love story with the piano as the clue and the sea as the background. The topic "Piano Class" is really the finishing touch. Because of this, the hero was dumb but did not lose his voice. Because of this, Ida broke up with Stewart and fell in love with Binns. The chapter of Love of Keys puts an end to the story. The piano is destroyed and the fingers are broken. Ida and Binns move away from home. Pushing the piano into the sea created a romantic picture of Ada wandering in the sea. The heroine wears a silver finger sleeve and plays another piano to mark her rebirth. All these are the infinite charm of the piano. In the melodious piano sound, the audience will feel relaxed and happy after listening to this touching love carol. In this film, the director also fully demonstrated the charm of the sea to the audience. Ada, the heroine, came from the sea and returned to the sea. Binns fell in love with Ada in The Sound of the Waves. The sea ended Ada's first half life, purified her soul and gave her the courage to move towards a new life. There are many piano shots by the sea in the film, which makes people feel the beauty of the integration of music and nature. The sound of the piano is accompanied by the sound of the waves, creating a beautiful artistic conception.
Compared with the sound of piano and waves, Ada's silence is more distinctive. Her silence seems to be not a defect, but a perfect need. Through her silent language, the audience seems to know more about her rich inner world and have more sympathy and pity for Sargam, who is both talented and beautiful. Of course, this is inseparable from holly hunter's superb acting skills. Known by the European media as "Madame Bovary of Oceania", it is not surprising that she won the Cannes Film Award for her extraordinary temperament and superb acting skills and won unanimous praise from the world. Her big talking eyes, sometimes full of affection, sometimes full of sadness, sometimes full of expression, sometimes full of anger, in her opinion, any spoken language becomes redundant. In addition, Holly Hunt's nine-year history of learning piano is also of great benefit to her in shaping a successful movie hero.
Another feature of this film is that the director successfully used static and dynamic contrast. This contrast is first manifested in Ada's silence and the interference and noise around her. Daughter Flora told Ida's inner world: "Mom says people in this world talk nonsense all day." The world thinks that the fate of the dumb is tragic, but Ada thinks that detachment is lucky. Her rich spiritual connotation freed herself from the bondage of language. Although the song is high and few, there are still bosom friends in the world after all. In silence, she is like a ghost, waiting silently to find the destination of her soul.
When IDA first arrived on the island, she stared at the heavy rain outside the window and missed the abandoned piano. The sea roared, and the exciting sound of the piano made people feel ups and downs. The white piano in the center of the picture looks so quiet, so solemn and so noble. Although the waves are fierce, the sound of the piano on the shore is unimpeded. It is the incarnation of Ida. At the end of the film, when the piano dragged Ada to the bottom of the sea, the deep sea world was still silent, but we heard Ada's heart beating violently. In this quiet world, her thoughts changed. Her will chose life and gave up the idea of returning with the piano, so her new life opened the first movement. The contrast between dynamic and static also completed Binns' ideological transformation. At first, he reluctantly followed Ada's mother and daughter to the seaside, but when he saw Ada playing the piano, her face was smiling, her heart was smiling, her daughter was smiling, and the sea seemed to be smiling, but Binns, who didn't understand the mystery, was silent on the beach. When Ada's mother and daughter were intoxicated by the joyful sound of the piano, he just looked on coldly. He silently tidied up the boards on the ground and pondered the huge notes left by Flora's dance steps on the beach. His heart secretly sprouted love for Ada.
Director Campbell received formal training in painting and sculpture before shooting, so he has unique skills in using colors and pictures. At the end of the film, Ada falls into the water, which is similar to the similar scene in the barge Atlanta filmed by the famous French director Jean Vigo in 1934. The latter has become a classic picture in the film history, and Camborn's application of modern trick photography gives people a magical and romantic feeling. Using mirror photography to shoot Stewart's observation of Ada's mother and daughter and the surrounding environment from the mirror at the wedding is unforgettable because it reveals his shameless attitude towards reality. When he learned that his wife was going to relive the old dream with Binns and rushed home angrily with an axe, in order to show his inner imbalance, the picture tilted sharply and the Woods flashed quickly, indicating that a catastrophe was coming. When Aidayuan married to New Zealand, the sky and the sea were the same color, a wonderful blue, mysterious and depressing. Only after watching the whole movie can I know that the director is really ingenious.
Piano lessons are like a cup of sweet green tea, and the entrance is a little bitter. Only by savoring it carefully can we realize its wonders. Piano Class is a masterpiece that can stand scrutiny. Nature is silent, love is silent. The power of tranquility seems weak, but it is endless ... Suddenly, a thunder broke through the sea and the silent cry sang an ode to human nature.
