Recently I re-watched a masterpiece that fully meets this standard -

The Korean film: "Out".

This is an old film that was released in China in 2005. I recently reviewed the old disc and put it in the disc player.

When I started watching it from the beginning, I still couldn’t stop, and until the end of the film, I was filled with tears.

First let’s talk about the entertainment of this film.

It tells a story of "serial derailment".

Extramarital affairs, commonly known as cheating.

Why do we always feel that TV series are popular while movies are relatively elegant?

An important reason lies in the careful use of lenses.

TV dramas have more time, and the cameras often take the trouble to explain the details.

Movies usually finish everything within 90 minutes, with many places being touched upon, which is exactly in line with the Chinese aesthetic standard of "elegance" - being subtle and leaving enough room for imagination.

For example, when In-soo’s wife wakes up, there is a scene where In-soo feeds his wife.

The camera turned and Shuying passed by the window and saw this scene.

In addition, with a large number of fixed camera shots and slowly moving long shots, the overall artistic style is elegant, calm, subtle and restrained.

Of course, this film is not blindly restrained, otherwise it will be monotonous and lack strength.

The characteristic of a controlled shot is that it goes back and forth - the character's expression is only shown once, the camera switches quickly and never returns.

At the end of the film, after enough foreshadowing, the characters' emotions reach a climax, as if a symphony has played to a glorious and gorgeous passage, or a painting has reached a rich and colorful part, and the use of lenses has also changed accordingly, with restraint. When Seo-young’s husband passed away and she was about to return to Seoul, she couldn’t bear to leave at the station, so she returned to the hotel again and stared at her for a long time in the cafe where she dated In-soo near the hotel. Shuying's sadness, self-pity, helplessness, reluctance, and all kinds of complicated and tangled emotions are all revealed in this set of shots, giving the audience a strong sense of empathy.

This film also has many artistic features, such as the use of reflections from glass and mirrors to create meaningful images.

In many places in the film, the figures of In-soo and Seo-young are framed through the reflection of glass, and they are like exquisite character paintings, creating a blurred and beautiful artistic conception.
