South African photographer Carter: Did the hungry girl in Sudan survive?

In the 1990s. A photographer from South Africa photographed the hunger in Sudan with his own life and named it Hungry Sudan. This photo also won the Pulitzer Prize for Journalism, the highest prize in the press, but it was because of this photo that he lost his life forever.

The photographer's name is kevin carter. He was born in the suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa on 1960. Carter's parents are British immigrants. At that time, South Africa was in the hands of the Dutch. Carter has always been deeply suspicious of the unfair attitude of local people towards blacks. 16 years old, Carter was drafted after graduating from school, but these days are not easy for him.

In the life of the national defense forces, he saw widespread discrimination, and white soldiers unscrupulously laughed at and abused black soldiers. All this made Carter feel bitter inside. He once publicly supported the black people to fight for their legitimate rights and interests, but in exchange, he was beaten and ridiculed.

1983 Carter, who finished his military service, worked in a photographic equipment store. From then on, he began to contact news photography and soon became a sports news photographer for Sunday Express. In the following ten years, Carter worked in some large news organizations, and he always devoted himself to shouting injustice for those who suffered.

1993, Carter quit his job and went to Sudan in North Africa with friends. As soon as they got off the plane, they were shocked by the desolate scene here. Everywhere they look, there are barren land, bony children and crying old people. Near the relief food distribution point, Carter heard a faint sob.

The voice came from a little girl crawling on the ground. Because of hunger, she has no strength to walk. Her mother is not far away waiting for relief food, so she has no time to take care of her. She is wearing a bracelet of humanitarian aid because she is too thin to see her real age.

At this time, a vulture flew behind the little girl, as if waiting for her death, and then had a hearty meal. Carter was shocked by this photo. He filmed the film "Hungry Sudan" with tears in his eyes, then drove away the vulture and leaned under a tree alone and cried silently.

Later, this photo appeared on the front page of The New York Times, and Carter won the Pulitzer Prize for Journalism with 1994. However, since then, he has been criticized and attacked by all walks of life. A reporter in Florida wrote in his column: "He is a selfish reporter who won a Pulitzer Prize for stepping on a little girl."

These malicious remarks, coupled with the particularity of Carter's career, always see images of despair, blood and violence, and finally his spiritual world is defeated. 1On July 27th, 994, Carter committed suicide by using carbon monoxide in the car. His last words were that he felt sorry for everyone.
