CMOS is the abbreviation of complementary metal oxide semiconductor. Refers to a technology for manufacturing large-scale integrated circuit chips or chips manufactured by this technology. It is a read-write RAM chip on the computer motherboard.
Because of its reading and writing characteristics, it is used to save data on the computer motherboard after the BIOS sets the computer hardware parameters. This chip is only used to store data.
The setting of various parameters in BIOS has to go through special procedures. Generally, the BIOS setup program is integrated into the chip by the manufacturer. When the computer is turned on, you can enter the BIOS setup program through a specific key, which is convenient for setting up the system. Therefore, BIOS settings are sometimes called CMOS settings.
The photoelectric conversion principle of CCD and CMOS image sensor is the same, and their main difference is that the signal reading process is different; Because there is only one (or several) output nodes of CCD for unified reading, the consistency of its signal output is very good; In CMOS chip, each pixel has its own signal amplifier for charge-voltage conversion, so the consistency of its signal output is poor.
However, in order to read the whole image signal, CCD needs a wider signal bandwidth of the output amplifier, while in CMOS chip, the bandwidth requirement of the amplifier in each pixel is lower, which greatly reduces the power consumption of the chip, which is the main reason why the power consumption of CMOS chip is lower than that of CCD. Although the power consumption is reduced, the inconsistency of megaamplifiers brings higher fixed noise, which is the inherent disadvantage of CMOS compared with CCD.
From the point of view of manufacturing technology, the circuits and devices in CCD are integrated on semiconductor single crystal materials, and the process is complicated. Only a few manufacturers in the world can produce CCD chips, such as Darsa, Sony and Panasonic. CCD can only output analog electrical signals, which need to be processed by subsequent address decoder, analog converter and image signal processor, and also need to provide three groups of power supply synchronous clock control circuits with different voltages, so the integration level is very low.
CMOS is integrated on a semiconductor material called metal oxide, which is the same as the process of producing thousands of semiconductor integrated circuits such as computer chips and memory devices, so the cost of producing CMOS is much lower than that of CCD.
At the same time, CMOS chip can integrate the image signal amplifier, signal reading circuit, A/D conversion circuit, image signal processor and controller on one chip, and all the basic functions of the camera can be realized with only one chip, so the concept of chip-level camera comes into being.
