Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design Foundation Year Course Structure

The course lasts for one year, lasts for 32 weeks, and consists of three parts. Each part is composed of different units. These units are the basic components of the course. Each unit is similar to a learning package in terms of allocation of learning time, including lectures, independent learning, access to resources and assessment.

Each of the three parts contains 40 credits, with the first part containing 40 Level 3 credits, and the second and third parts each containing 40 Level 4 credits.

Only after successfully completing the first part of the study can you enter the second part of the study.

You must successfully complete all modules in Parts 1 and 2 before proceeding to Part 3. Successful completion of 120 credits of study is required to obtain a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design.

Course schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 10:30 am to 4:30 pm. Occasionally there will be studio activities or other additional courses on Wednesday or Friday.

Course Outline

Art and Design Foundation allows you to learn through exploration and discovery. Learning objectives are achieved through participation in projects, lectures and academic visits. The course is essentially a transitional stage of study in art, design and media, preparing you for entry into higher education or a career.

This Foundation Year offers a wide range of specializations that have corresponding undergraduate degree courses within the College or the University as a whole. The expertise offered in each track will help you develop a portfolio to apply for undergraduate degree courses in relevant subjects.

The basic learning methods of Central Saint Martins are: experimentation, innovation, risk-taking, questioning and exploration.
