Liang Sicheng’s former residence

The value of the former residences of Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin lies in people

The value of the former residences of celebrities lies in "people" rather than "things"

Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin, the Chinese people* The designer of the National Emblem of the Republic of China and the Monument to the People's Heroes, the national award for Chinese architectural design is called the "Liang Sicheng Award".

Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin lived in this courtyard in Beizongbu Hutong, Beijing from 1931 to 1937. During the six years they lived here, the couple discovered the earliest and best-preserved stone arch bridge in the world - the Sui Dynasty Zhaozhou Bridge in Zhao County, Hebei Province, and the tallest existing wooden building in the world - Yingxian County, Shanxi Province. The wooden pagodas of Buddhist palaces and temples in the Liao Dynasty, and the greatest existing Tang Dynasty building in China - the Foguang Temple in Wutai, Shanxi Province

It was also during these six years that they, together with Liu Dunzhen and other colleagues from the China Architecture Society , visited 15 provinces and more than 200 counties non-stop, measured, photographed, analyzed and studied more than 2,000 architectural cultural relics, and finally wrote the Chinese people's own architectural history in 1943. In May 1945 during the Anti-Japanese War and in March 1949 during the Liberation War, they issued two heavy lists of Chinese cultural heritage preservation to the combatants. As Wang Jun said, these two lists written by Liang Sicheng "put eyes on the guns. Otherwise, China's cultural heritage would be in dire straits." It is understood that the list of Chinese cultural heritage preservation submitted during the War of Liberation was also the main basis for my country to announce the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units.

Whether a celebrity’s former residence has cultural relic protection value, the most fundamental difference from the evaluation criteria of other buildings is: celebrity’s former residence focuses on “people”, while architecture focuses on “things”. The former residence of a celebrity can be a mansion or an ordinary building. As long as the residents of this ordinary building have had a significant impact on economic and social development, this ordinary building is the former residence of a celebrity and has cultural relic value. Shan Jixiang, director of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, emphasized: "We must focus on the spiritual, cultural, and social value of the former residence, and we must not simply consider the architectural quality and artistic value."
