What's so good about Sony recording the new artifact FS7M2? Listen to the conversation between a British Chinese photographer and Sony Europe.

Sony's new magic machine FS7M2 was sought after by many photographers as soon as it went on the market. They dedicated the title of "magic machine" originally belonging to the previous generation product FS7 to this new machine. In fact, Sony's PXW-FS7 has become very popular. It is the most popular handheld 4K camera in many countries. On the one hand, Sony's FS7 itself has a very superior configuration. On the other hand, its cost performance is far higher than that of competitors' products (especially Canon's C300 Mark II).

So why did Sony launch a new version immediately? Sony's official explanation is that because the FS7 is so popular, users' feedback on the aircraft is unprecedented. Many people expressed their praise for the FS7 and their expectations for the new machine. Sony said that they released the new version in response to consumer expectations, and fine-tuned the hardware based on FS7, such as adding an infinitely adjustable electronic nd system and a lock-and-loop lens holder.

Dan Chung, a famous British Chinese photographer and critic of photography technology, had a face-to-face communication with Pfeifer, strategic marketing manager of Sony (Europe) around FS7M2.

Dan Chung: Why did Sony release FS7M2 at this time?

Pfeifer: We have received a lot of feedback from consumers, which is very useful. On the one hand, it shows that our products are deeply loved by everyone. On the other hand, we can see that people have further expectations for us. So we decided to use this product to respond to our consumers.

Dan Chung: So this is actually not a system upgrade of FS7?

Pfeifer clause: Yes, the release of FS7M2 will not replace FS7, which will continue to be sold. Therefore, after the official release of FS7M2, consumers can buy three sets with lens groups: FS7, FS7M2 and FS7M2.

Dan Chung: What's special about FS7M2 compared with other similar products?

Pfeifer clause: It is undeniable that FS7M2 is similar to similar products, but the target audience of our new products is mainly documentary photographers, especially single or small shooting teams. Our improved ergonomic design and key matching will bring them a better shooting experience. You can hold the camera in your hand or carry it on your shoulder, which gives the photographer great flexibility and allows him to complete the ideal shooting quickly and accurately.

Dan Chung: Apart from the design, this machine has little change in imaging compared with the FS7. For example, it uses the same imager as FS7, except that the color gamut of BT.2020 has hardly changed.

Pfeifer: Yes, this is exactly what we want, because as I mentioned above, many functions of FS7 are highly praised by consumers. We don't want consumers to worry about whether this machine is fundamentally different from FS7 when they see this new product.

Dan Chung: So if the two products are so close, is it possible for users of FS7 to experience the functions of FS7M2 by upgrading their machines?

Pfeifer Clause: Unfortunately, this is impossible. The two major upgrades of FS7M2: stepless adjustable electronic ND system and lock-ring lens mount, are major upgrades to the machine, and are upgrades at the hardware level, which cannot be completed by any third party. In order to complete the design of the lock ring bayonet, we completely redesigned the front end of the camera.

From the above interview, we can find that FS7M2 is not a major upgrade to FS7, but the newly added function is still exciting for photographers who are interested in making documentaries or movies, which is also a reason worth starting with. But if you expect a "revolutionary" upgrade of existing products, you may need to give Sony more time.
