Twenty-two years ago, Price was a professional photographer with a black-and-white photography magazine, a wife and children, and a quiet life. However, he feels that the days of struggling for mortgage and rent have taken him away from life and drained his creativity. He decided to change his lifestyle.
He divorced, returned to his hometown of Oregon, found a wasteland, got a second-hand Indian tent, and lived for three years. If it is not too cold in winter, life will be very comfortable. He tried tree houses and mountain tents again. 10 years later, he thought of a long-term solution: dig a hole in the ground.
Price's Indian River Ranch is located in a small forest called Joseph. In the small mound, there is his "Hobbit World"-climbing through a door that only allows one person to pass through and entering an underground home built with wooden boards. The desk lamp lit up the plush carpet and the square skylight. This cave, which is only high enough for sitting and wide enough for straight legs, was Price's home in the past 13 years.
Cave life is modern, with ovens, woks, bookshelves, CD players, telephones and wooden hangers. According to Price, "everything is within one arm" when sitting, which is called "body shape". People can see everything when they sit, without looking for it and without pressure.
His cave world doesn't stop there. Outside the house, there are western cowboy-style toilets, sauna rooms and shower rooms set up with wooden boards. He also attracted nearby streams and turned swamps into meadows and ponds.
Underground circuits support his modern Hobbit world, but Price plans to try to generate electricity with propane next year, so that he can get rid of modern lines completely.
It is everyone's dream to have a secret territory, Price said. When you are young, when you find such a place, you can escape. When you grow up, the dream of escape is gone. In his view, to build a hole in the ground is to look at the world with children's eyes again.
Painting is also his childhood dream. 10 years ago, he found that his 4-year-old son's paintings were far more imaginative than himself. "Everyone is born an artist, but when he grows up, he forgets." He decided to paint truthfully again as a child sees the world. Now, he draws simple children's pictures every day, recording the world he sees, the dead birds in the Woods, the people who look after the house and the people who are ignored by the world.
Price recalled the past, "life is so regular that you become its slave." Now, he walks on a path covered with fallen leaves and climbs to the tallest tree to see the sky. "You can live freely and live in harmony with the rhythm of nature and your rhythm."
This kind of life is not expensive, 5000 yuan a year is enough. Rent this land for only 100 dollars a year, drink the water from the stream and pay some electricity bills. It is not difficult to make this money. Price works part-time in a cemetery, tending the lawn. Although his income is not high, he also lives comfortably, because "to do such outdoor work, you don't have to put up with office politics."
The unique lifestyle itself also brings benefits. About 100 fans are willing to pay $5 for his hand-painted diary; Some companies send tents, others send jackets, and leather shoes dealers supply them. A few years ago, Wizwheels, a tricycle dealer, gave him a tricycle worth $2,000 to help him travel and draw pictures for his trip. Of course, Price also advertised tricycles.
"In the past, I worked hard just to earn a little money." Price said. Now, it is enough for him to spend only a little time working, not only to survive, but also to do what he likes-painting and traveling.
A few years ago, Price published a book called My Little House, which showed people everything from how to choose a suitable piece of land to how to build a hole with the simplest tools and free materials.
This "2 1 century Thoreau" actually has only one dream: to live simply. "A little money can make us live. Because that's how I live, I can draw it for you. " In the new book "Completely Simple", Price said this.
