Tell you my college story - the growth path of an advertising novice
When the word "advertising" is mentioned, what is your first impression? Post a small advertisement? Print shop or copy shop? Or the various ads that pop up every time you watch a show halfway through? Maybe the first impression of many people is like this, advertising? It feels unreliable, unrealistic, and useless...
For me, "advertising" means my four years of college.
I always remember what the class teacher told us in the first semester of freshman year. When this semester is over, 1/8 of your college life will be over. After freshman year, 1/8 of your college life will be over. 4. When your sophomore year is over, half of college will be over. Now it seems that less than 1/8 of my university is left.
The class teacher also said that "17 Guangzhou Normal University" will be your common home during your four years of college and even in your future lives.
Yes, no matter where we go, 17 Guangzhou Normal University is our most precious memory in college.
Insert two pictures of 17 Guangzhou Normal University’s confession wall hahaha
Just a quick aside, I actually submitted the manuscript for the second confession wall because some of the copywriting was borrowed The circle of friends of the Youth League Secretary, and the first confession wall was submitted by him, so that everyone later thought that the second confession wall was also posted by him. This "blame" made him bear so much responsibility. It’s been so long, I’m so sorry hahaha
A few more group photos!
I love 17 Guangzhou Normal University!
Ahem, let’s get back to the topic
Probably, for every student majoring in advertising, the word “advertising” is of great significance!
I remember when I first came to school last semester, Xiaoyu told me, Senior sister, everyone in my family said that there is no future in studying advertising, and I felt so confused... Actually, I feel this way deeply. I understand, because up to now, those seven aunts and eight aunts have never stopped questioning and misunderstanding this major. Some friends with whom I rarely have contact also say that advertising feels impractical.
To be honest, before I went to college, I had almost never heard of advertising as a major. When filling out the college entrance examination, each school could fill in 6 majors. I remember that my first choice of majors in all schools at that time was English. But since the college entrance examination score is not very high, I worry that I may have passed the school's admission line, but not reached the professional score line. Rather than being randomly transferred to a major that you don't like if you fail to meet the major score line, it is better to fill up those 6 majors. I remember that I filled in English, Business English, Applied English, Translation, History (Normal College), and Advertising. When I was filling out my major in advertising, I only had two words in my mind: interesting and creative.
Later, when I entered advertising, I was as deep as the sea, and English was a stranger from then on.
I remember the basics of advertising design in the PS class in the first semester of my freshman year. In the first class, Teacher Qi Xian asked us to take turns by student number to talk about why we chose this major, or which advertisement we had a better impression of. Deep down, let’s talk about your views.
Admittedly, since I had little experience, I was extremely nervous at the time. So, I put in the definition of advertising that I learned in Teacher Keli’s “Introduction to Advertising” class the day before.
“Advertising is a method in which the advertiser pays a certain price to convey specific information that has been scientifically refined and artistically processed to the target audience through the communication media, in order to change or strengthen people’s ideas and behaviors. The purpose is to publicize non-face-to-face information dissemination activities.” I remember the teacher commented that I captured the words science and art quite well.
Probably because Teacher Qixian is funny and humorous, I feel very relaxed in his PS class. Moreover, the software Photoshop is actually very practical. Sometimes we need to make posters, leaflets, long legs, ID photos, etc. There are not many people in the club who know how to use this software. At this time, no one will look down on our advertisements. A professional person. I seem to like this major a little bit.
Later, in the second semester of my freshman year, I came into contact with the Grand Canton Competition and the Academy Award for the first time. At that time, I liked to run around to participate in creative campus lecture tours for NTU’s Faculty Awards and the Normal University’s Broad Competition.
Although it rained heavily that day, I still took the subway with my roommate.
In the second semester of my freshman year, we started advertising photography and TV camera classes at the same time. I really like the practical classes in advertising. I like to go outside with my classmates to take beautiful photos with my SLR. In order to take pictures of animals chasing butterflies, I like to carry a camera everywhere to record all kinds of interesting videos. Since I’m not particularly photogenic, I mostly shoot and edit with a handheld camera behind my back. So I seem to have two more skills, I can shoot videos and edit videos.
Later, when it was time to change majors, 4 of the 5 students in the class who changed majors switched to English-related majors, English teaching and translation.
But I can’t bear to part with it. I like this major and I want to stay here.
I posted a post during the summer vacation of my freshman year.
I never thought I was a talented person.
Ever since I went to college and learned that I was admitted to the advertising department, I have endlessly doubted whether I have the ability to be creative.
Later, I entered the advertising class. When I saw my classmates’ final assignments and entries for the Grand Advertising Competition, I was in a daze: Damn it, how did you come up with such an awesome idea? Why couldn’t I think of it? !
Every time I give an advertising lecture and hear other people come up with good ideas and insights, but I didn’t think of them, I can’t help but feel envious, irritated and doubt myself.
When I was able to change my major when I was older, I chose to stay in the advertising department. The appeal of advertising to me has surpassed English. Once I entered the elite family, it was as deep as the sea. From then on, Xiao Lang was just a stranger.
When she was changing her major, someone told me that she had already completed the practical courses of advertising (PS, videography, and photography), and the following courses were basically theoretical courses, so she wanted to leave advertising.
But I always feel that loving advertising is not just talking about it, but connecting advertisers with yourself, meeting all kinds of interesting advertising people, playing with various software, A variety of creative sparks collide...
The road to advertising is both long and wide. But I believe that there is no road longer than feet, and no mind wider than people. As long as I have a love for advertising, everything will be expected.
If you feel the "fun" of advertising in your freshman year, then you really have to learn "creativity" in your sophomore year.
In the first semester of my sophomore year, I started a film and television advertising creative class, and the teacher asked us to make a video to participate in the Academy Awards competition. In the group division of labor, I chose editing. So from the time the script was released to filming to final editing, I was almost involved in the entire process.
Probably the group with me in it always belongs to the high-productivity group. I remember that in the first semester of my sophomore year and the second semester of my sophomore year, our group shot 4 or 5 videos for the competition each semester. It is also a pleasure to win a small Academy Award finalist award and excellence award. After all, in this small circle, we finally got a little recognition and affirmation.
Yes, the growth of an advertising novice is always slow and difficult. We don’t have particularly good ideas, nor can we do particularly cool special effects. All we can do is keep practicing, trying and summarizing.
I work hard and I am very lucky. In the second semester of my sophomore year, I participated in the Daguang Competition, and a piece of copywriting adapted from a poem actually won the second prize at the provincial level. That was the first provincial award in my advertising career, and it was precisely because of this provincial award that I was able to apply for national awards. Everything went so smoothly, so smoothly that I couldn't even imagine it.
Perhaps only you will know how many times you have gone crazy thinking about creativity, how many nights you have spent constantly revising videos and discussing your works with teachers. Perhaps what is called "smoothness" is really luck. The harder you work, the luckier you will be. And I am also very grateful to the teachers who have been patiently encouraging me and giving me valuable opinions and suggestions. Many times it is because I don’t want to live up to the teacher’s expectations, so I want to work hard to grow.
Later, in the second semester of our junior year, which was also the last time we participated in the Daguang Competition, we began to make plans. At that time, I fell in love with the TV series "Beautiful Breeze and Moonlight Beauty's Strategy Sheet" when I saw it, so I started to look through the videos of the on-site planning cases of the Grand Contest over the years, and then found a few friends to do it with me. Since we are at home due to the epidemic, we can only "cloud brainstorming" online.
Since I was in the early stages of preparing for the postgraduate entrance examination, I was under a lot of pressure. In addition, I also had 9 professional courses and 4 minor courses. It was not easy to do a planning project for the first time. Fortunately, the teachers are very supportive of us, constantly giving us suggestions for revision, and providing us with a lot of useful reference data.
At that time, I felt that maybe the final result would not be satisfactory, but during the last advertising competition in college, I tried my best, I worked hard, and I had a clear conscience. What was the result? It’s not that important anymore. What’s important is that I learned a lot from this process.
Compared with when I was a sophomore, as the main force participating in the Grand Cantonese Competition, we were forced by the teacher to submit works and were unable to rush to the shelves. In my junior year, I took the initiative to collect information on my own. Research propositions and discuss creative ideas with teachers. This time, although there will be struggles in the creative process, it is more about enjoying the happiness. Maybe it’s because I have some competition experience during my freshman and sophomore years, so I have seen more things and have a little more ideas. Keep your feet on the ground and have fun doing it.
Finally, our hard work paid off and our planning project won the provincial award. That was the second time I won the provincial award, and I can say that I was really happy.
Perhaps for those big guys who often win various awards, these are nothing, but for a growing advertising novice, it is a great recognition and encouragement.
I remember that in the first semester of my senior year, because the postgraduate entrance examination for colleges and universities was about advertising, I needed to look up some advertising cases as corpus for answering questions.
Those are very real thoughts.
On this road, I always feel that I grow too slowly. My love seems to be very superficial.
In fact, I feel very lucky that I met a very good senior student in my first semester. At that time, I had an average appearance, mediocre grades, introversion and shyness, no creativity and not good enough, and neither my teachers nor my classmates could remember me. The only thing that may be a little different is that he is a little bit less afraid of tigers than a newborn calf, has a thicker skin, and has a lot of enthusiasm. This is how I got the recognition and appreciation from my seniors.
At first, I originally planned to create a club with my seniors. Later, I stopped doing it for some reasons, so my senior invited me to join his studio.
There is such a senior who will urge me to read books related to my major. He will share his internship experience with me. He will give me orders that I can do and he will teach me. I have some issues that I need to pay attention to when communicating with Party A’s father. He will ask me to post some pictures to improve my professional skills. He will ask me to insist on learning some self-study tutorials on professional software. He is obviously very busy, but he still spends time teaching How do we create the special effects we want for pictures. Everything he did was not because I was good enough. On the contrary, I was still lazy. I often refused to read the books he asked me to read or could not remember them. I often failed to finish the tasks he assigned me on time. Finish. However, when he comes across some orders that I can do, he will think of me. If there are good professional tutorials and professional books, he will recommend them to me. He will also urge me to keep studying. On Christmas, he will invite people from our studio to have dinner together. If he didn't go to eat, he would remember to send me a red envelope and ask me to buy a cup of hot milk tea. Even, on the morning of the first day of the new year, the senior personally called me to say New Year greetings...
I remember the senior said, don't say "oh" when talking to Party A's father. I remember the senior said that someone will ask you to change the official seal in the future. , change the data, change the name, try to get rid of them all, this snake cannot be touched. I remember my senior said, "The world is a big place, you have to be happy every day."
Whether it is professional skills or principles of life, whether it is urging me to read professional books or Christmas red envelopes, in this small studio, the seniors hold up a small sky for us. If Entrepreneurship Street hadn't been demolished, maybe I could have learned more.
I am full of gratitude and touching to my seniors. I only know that in the future, I must be as good a person as my seniors! Maybe I am not a Chollima, but my direct senior, the head of our studio, is my Bole. That is, when you are not good enough, others' recognition and appreciation of you is extremely precious. So out of everything I can say, I still only know how to say thank you. Like I always say, maybe I'm not perfect, but I'm worth the wait!
I remember I told my school girl this when she was talking about advertising with me.
I told my teacher that before. In fact, I am not excellent, but if I want to do something well, then I am willing to spend time to do it well.
Later I finally understood that only when you have ambition can you have motivation, and only when you are interested can you persevere. Love lasts for a long time, and love will last the longest. It’s because I really like playing, writing, and reading, and I know what I want, so even if no one forces me, I will take the initiative to fight for what I want. I have never been the kind of person who is very smart and has a lot of creativity, nor is I the kind of person who knows a lot of software and can do various special effects. I am just willing to spend time on the things I like.
You see, I am very ordinary, not excellent, I don’t know how to use software, and my creativity is nothing remarkable, but I have never stopped working hard, and I am growing.
The road to advertising is both long and wide. But I believe that there is no road longer than feet, and no mind wider than people. As long as I have a love for advertising, everything will be expected.
The road is long and long, and I will search up and down. I hope that every advertising student can find the passion in his heart, love what he loves, do what he does, and ask no questions about the east or the west.
