The Huizhou architecture with white walls and black tiles is very beautiful, which also affects the rural architectural style in Anhui and its surrounding Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces. However, with the passage of time, most of today's Huizhou architecture only retains the appearance, and the internal structure is not so particular. Huizhou architecture is also an important part of Huizhou culture, and its internal structure and design are rich in depth, which is very worth visiting and understanding.

At present, there are many Huizhou-style old buildings preserved in ancient Huizhou villages, which are very ornamental, but they often have only one prominent feature and scattered knowledge points. It is still difficult for tourists to understand all the essence of Huizhou architecture in a diversified way. For example, when people look at memorial archways, they will choose to go to Tang Yue, and when they look at wood carvings, they may go to Lu Cun.

If you want to know the essence of Huizhou architecture in one stop, there is another place. It is the Huizhou merchant mansion in Shexian county. Here is a collection of archways, stages, pavilions, gardens and Huizhou "three sculptures" (stone carving, wood carving and brick carving), with almost everything you want to see.

After entering the Huizhou Merchants Mansion, just like its name, visitors can intuitively feel that it is a "mansion". The patio behind the porch is the main lighting and ventilation system of Huizhou architecture. Its open design is suitable for rain, and it will also collect rainwater and catch it with a vat. This is because in the eyes of Huizhou merchants, water symbolizes "wealth", so it must be gathered together, and Dagang is only used for fire fighting besides gathering water. After all, most of the old Huizhou buildings are made of wood.

Although it is a big family, the space of each hall of Huizhou merchants mansion is not very large, but the division of functions is very obvious. For example, the host's reception hall, the wife's reception hall, the young lady's boudoir and so on. The furnishings in these halls are also standardized. For example, there will be a clock in the main hall, with bottles and mirrors on both sides, which is what we often say.

Large families actively pay attention to details, which is mainly reflected in the "Huizhou Sandiao". These carving skills are very craftsman spirit, and today's handicraft works should be difficult to reach the level at that time. Stone carving and drilling carving are generally placed in a better position, so it is not easy to see the details.

But wood carvings are mostly used for doors and windows, and they can be seen clearly. Some of them are still fresh in their minds a hundred years later. It is said that the best Huizhou craftsmen at that time went to work for emperors and dignitaries.

These things mentioned above can be found in even the smallest old house in Huizhou. However, there are memorial archways, waterside pavilions and gardens in Huizhou merchants' mansion, which are not available to ordinary people. These were leisure places where people with certain status opposed friends to recite poems. Nowadays, there are too many leisure ways in society, but it is very comfortable and healing to feed fish in the pond, not to mention the relative lack of entertainment at that time.

At this time, some people will think that the owner of Huizhou merchants' mansion at that time must be either rich or expensive, right? In fact, this is not a well-preserved big house. This scenic spot, also known as the "West Garden", is to move 26 buildings with Huizhou characteristics scattered throughout the county into the West Garden in accordance with the principle of "restoration". So visitors can even see many wooden doors and windows with numbers on them.

Some tourists also said that since it is a "moved" building, it is of little significance to visit it. Actually, it's not. Huizhou merchants' mansion spent nearly 20 years collecting old objects from the people. It can be said that every place is the essence! Moreover, these old objects are in endangered buildings, and they may not exist when they collapse.

Having such a place to gather them together can not only make them continue to shine, but also facilitate more tourists to understand and feel Huizhou culture in one stop. Why not do it? In my opinion, Huizhou merchants' mansion is not an old house, but a Huizhou architecture museum. It is also a paid scenic spot, with tickets for 80 yuan/person.
