How to make a foggy photographic work

Lead: Many photographers like to shoot the clouds in the mountains, so the films they shoot have a mysterious aesthetic feeling. So how do you take foggy photos? Come and have a look with me!

How to shoot foggy photography? Types of natural fog and shooting skills

If the air near the ground is cooled to a certain extent when the water vapor is sufficient, the breeze and the atmosphere are stable, the water vapor in the air will condense into tiny water droplets and be suspended in the air, which will reduce the visibility of the ground. This weather phenomenon is called fog. Fog most often occurs in the morning between February and April in spring, autumn and winter.

radiation fog

Formed by radiation cooling on the ground, it often appears in sunny days, breezes, nights and early morning when the water vapor near the ground is abundant and stable or there is inversion, which is called radiation fog in meteorology. Radiation fog is ideal in landscape photography, because this kind of fog mostly appears in the valley and hangs on the ground. On the one hand, it can reveal some high points, and the works can be layered; On the other hand, it is easy to get a wonderful backlight effect because of the abundant sunshine. Because this fog usually appears in the early hours of the morning, photographers should get to the shooting location before sunrise. In addition, the shape of fog is constantly changing under the breeze. It's best to wait until the morning fog clears before ending shooting, so as not to miss the opportunity.

This work was taken in the summer in Bashang, Hebei Province. Choose the position of the side backlight, wait for the sunrise, and the fog will turn orange-red. The contrast between the close shot and the distant shot enhances the sense of space in the picture, and the middle shot and the distant mountain are hidden, resulting in melodious aesthetic feeling, just like a fairyland. In the composition, the author did not include the sky, because too bright sky will distract the audience's attention to the subject, and the light ratio is more difficult to control.

Sea fog

When warm and humid air in low altitude flows to the cold ground, water vapor condenses near the ground, which is called advection fog in meteorology. Advection fog has a wide range of formation, often appearing in pieces, which is generally a sign that the weather is changing from sunny to rainy. This kind of fog usually appears in the morning of late autumn and early winter, lasting for a long time, with a large range, thick fog and thick thickness, sometimes reaching several hundred meters. Advection fog is often accompanied by weather phenomena such as stratus clouds, broken rain clouds and Mao Mao rain.

This work was shot in late autumn in Xiangshan County, Zhejiang Province. This fog does not float on the surface, but has a certain height, and some high-rise buildings and higher peaks can still be exposed. When shooting, choose a high point, and you are likely to see the horizon. The author shot on a 28-story building, and the tall buildings and distant mountains were mixed by fog, which was very wonderful.

This work was shot in the late autumn in Tianping Mountain, Suzhou. Walking into the subject, using the principle of air perspective, the subject can be clear, the background is light, and the warm colors of leaves make the subject more prominent. It should be noted that in foggy days, you should be as close as possible to the subject. If you use a telephoto lens to enlarge the subject, the fog will affect the clarity of the subject.

mixing fog

Sometimes the fog formed by two reasons is called mixed fog, or the fog formed by mixing two unsaturated air masses with different temperatures is called mixed fog. This kind of fog has a wider range, more uniform distribution in high and low altitude, lower visibility and is not easy to show layering. In this case, people often give up shooting. In fact, good works with unique charm can also be filmed in such a fog. Being closer to the main body, or jumping with the color of the main body, can also highlight the main body. As shown above, although the background in the distance is not clear, it can create a hazy artistic conception. The shape of fog is not immutable, and mixed fog can sometimes be transformed from advection fog.

This painting was taken in the drunken lake of Shahe Reservoir in Beijing in early winter. Cold air meets warm lakes, producing a lot of fog. The camera shoots directly at the sun, with reeds as the foreground, forming such a beautiful picture with beautiful light and shadow and rich atmosphere.

evaporation fog

When cold air flows through a warm water surface, if there is a big difference between air temperature and water temperature, a large amount of water vapor evaporated from the water surface will condense into fog when it meets cold air near the water surface. At this time, there is often an inversion layer on the fog layer, otherwise convection will make the fog dissipate. Therefore, the evaporation fog has a small range and weak intensity, and generally appears around the pond in the second half of the year. In winter, this evaporation fog is also easy to appear in the downstream of some hydropower stations and lakes where warm water flows.

This painting was taken at the lower reaches of Xin 'anjiang Hydropower Station in Zhejiang in early winter. Using side backlight, the beam of sunlight hits the main body and outlines the fog. The combination of fog and light not only sets off the atmosphere but also highlights the main body.

smoke

The smog in cities is caused by another reason, that is, human activities. Sooner or later is the peak period of boiler heating. A large number of pollutants, such as suspended solids and automobile exhaust, are not easy to diffuse under the conditions of low air pressure and low wind speed, and are more likely to form smoke (fog) when combined with water vapor in the lower air. This kind of smoke (fog) often lasts for a long time and is evenly distributed. At this time, there are many harmful substances in the fog. Unless you really want to shoot, you should stop some outdoor activities properly.

This work was shot in winter in Taiyuan, Shanxi. The contrast between the foreground and the distant view makes people nearby relatively clear, overcomes the problem of low visibility in dense fog, and successfully shows a sense of space and hierarchy. The processing of hazy pictures and black and white tones provides rich imagination space.
