1. Don’t waste time on the “golden hour”

Generally speaking, the best time to take landscape photos is within an hour after sunrise or before sunset. It's the "golden moment". The scenery at this time will be very charming and full of changes under the changing sunlight. However, if you hope to wait for the golden hour shot in the mountains, you may miss it completely or find that the effect is not as magical as you imagined. So, when hiking and shooting in the mountains, don’t waste time waiting for the “golden moment.”

2. Use a gradient gray filter

The light in the mountains is more complicated. A common problem is that the sky is overexposed or there is no detail in the shadows. This is why a graduated gray filter becomes necessary. Use the gradient gray filter to balance the exposure of the sky and ground scenery to get more exciting photos.

3. Pay attention to unnatural shadows

When shooting, you may have to turn your back to the sun and use straight light to eliminate the shadows of the mountain scenery in front of you. However, the result may be shadows of trees or other objects on the ground. It is not easy to avoid these unnatural shadows by arranging the composition next to a lake or stream.

4. Think carefully before taking panoramic photos

When you climb to the top of the mountain, you are likely to see a wide and spectacular panoramic scenery. But no matter how hard you try, it’s hard to take beautiful photos. This is because there is no clear focus in this kind of scene, and it is difficult to balance the picture. So, while there is no doubt that the scenery in front of you is spectacular, the photos you take may not necessarily feel that way.

Usually a better approach is to include some objects in the foreground to add balance and depth to the picture. Another problem with taking panoramic photos is that the sky tends to give the mountains in the distance a blue cast. You can use a yellow filter or polarizer to reduce the color cast, but it cannot completely eliminate it.

5. Use a super wide angle to record the entire scene

A majestic scene can attract the audience, so you should take some such photos, otherwise it will be difficult for the audience to appreciate the beautiful scenery you see. Sometimes the trees on the mountain are so tall that it is difficult to take a complete picture. In this case, you can use a vertical composition.
