How was Avatar 2 filmed?

Avatar uses CG performance capture technology, live performance and three different shooting systems that combine the two.

1, innovative motion capture

The first is the virtual system of motion capture scene. Motion capture technology is usually shot like this:

Actors wearing motion capture suits with marked points can reflect infrared rays back to a fixed camera, and the camera provides data points for animators, which can be used to create animated characters later.

Cameron selects the final shots of these performances through the volume capture system, including the close-ups of human emotions shown by CG characters from the beginning, which will eventually be rendered by Vita Digital.

2. Further promote 3D technology.

After the performance was captured, the film crew packed their bags and went to New Zealand to shoot all the real scenes with Fusion 3D camera.

The fusion shooting device includes two Sony F950s cameras, which are used to shoot the native 3D lens, one is installed horizontally and the other is installed vertically. The camera shoots through a spectroscope, that is, one camera shoots the left-eye lens and the other shoots the right-eye lens.

Previous 3D cameras were all fixed in one device, but Fusion 3D devices can connect multiple cameras. Imitating the way the human eye adjusts the depth and focus, this creates a more natural 3D effect, which is in line with our own visual effect.

Fusion 3D devices are also used to photograph the combination of CGI and real elements. It is called Simulcam system, and the reflection mark is placed on the Fusion 3D camera so that it can be recognized by the motion capture system.

Through the camera monitor, the action elements in real life can be accurately synthesized with the CG performance actions captured before. Now, we call it augmented reality.

3.simulcam system

When CGI is combined with real scenes, Simulcam provides more controllability and flexibility. The traditional shooting method is to let the actors shoot against the green screen first, and then the animators combine the works with the actors later, which usually leads to some unnecessary concessions. The Simulcam system provides more accurate reference points for actors and filmmakers, thus reducing these potential concessions.

They can adjust the overall frame, or adjust the matching degree between the real action and CG action, and the final result will present a perfect shot with seamless connection.
