What historical event did Japan's occupation of Qingdao, Shandong Province reflect?
In 191, Shandong was divided into German sphere of influence by the Treaty of Xin and Chou. After the defeat of Germany in World War I, the Treaty of Versailles classified Shandong as a sphere of Japanese influence (marking the first Japanese occupation of Qingdao).
When the news reached Beijing, students marched and protested, which triggered the famous May 4th Movement. The slogan at that time was "Give me back Shandong, give me back Qingdao".
Harm of the Xin Chou Treaty:
Imperialism extorted huge compensation from China, and the total principal and interest amounted to 98 million taels of silver, which became a heavy burden for the people of China.
The Xin Chou Treaty has seriously damaged China's sovereignty. In this way, the Qing government completely became the tool for imperialism to rule China. The Treaty of Xin and Chou plunged China into the abyss of semi-colonial and semi-feudal society.
