Goth, a specific word, originally meant Germanic tribe in western Europe. On the level of architectural culture and writing from18th century to19th century, the so-called "Gothic Renaissance" excavated the gloomy mood of the Middle Ages from the grave of historical context.

Goths

Goths in the Gothic Empire are Germanic tribes. From the first century A.D., the Romans knew that they lived in the border area of the Danube. When the Huns moved from Central Asia to the west, the Goths fled the region because of pressure. They moved westward to Europe and crossed the Danube to escape the oncoming nomadic tribes. After the decline of Rome, the Goths in the early Middle Ages competed with other barbarians for the land left by the Western Roman Empire.

The only thing we know is that the Goths came from Glen Island in the Baltic Sea and split into two groups when crossing into Central Europe. Visigoths settled in present-day Romania in the second century AD. Ostrogoths continued to migrate eastward to the northwest coast of the Black Sea. In 376, under the oppression of Huns, Visigoths crossed the Danube from present-day Romania. The total number of men, women and children is about 60 thousand. They defeated the Roman army from Constantinople, once settled on the south bank of the Danube, and then advanced to Italy. In 409, the Visigoths plundered Rome under the leadership of King alaric, and then moved north to Gaul. The Romans had to give up Gaul in the southwest, and their power eventually expanded to the whole of Spain today.

Gothic

Gothic is a printed or handwritten font, which is very gorgeous.

Old English text

Gothic and Rococo are both highly decorative fonts. They pay more attention to lines, and the changes of patterns are also dotted with plants. You can learn about the British art movement at that time in 18- 19 century. Pay more attention to the thickness of font lines and the design of corners.

schools of literature

Since the end of 18, some literary works have been classified as "Gothic novels" because of their same tone and style. For example, walpole's Chateau Otranto, ann radcliff's The Mystery of the Buddha in Iudor, Louis's Monk, and of course mary shelley's. These works are devoted to dealing with cruel passion and supernatural horror themes, while the background of novels is usually set in desolate castles or secluded monasteries. The protagonist (usually young boys and girls) is trapped in irresistible magical sexual desire, and the abuser (usually positive) begins an encounter that ends in death ... The sexual/gender relationship contained in these novels is strangely entangled in sacredness. The extreme erotic climax comes from the moment of disillusionment (that is, the "completion" of the ceremony) The religious system symbolizing patriarchy and the dark (negative) forces trying to surpass it, in a certain unspeakable level, actually share the pleasure mode of "love mating to death" in a cool way. In the contemporary horror fiction camp, taking anne rice's Chronicle of Vampires as an example, this paper reveals the complex interaction between homosexual lust and patriarchal mechanism.

music genres

Representatives of early Gothic music such as Siouxsie, Banshee and Bauhaus. They are full of melancholy and world-weariness. Music is often cold and has a fine aesthetic feeling, but at the same time, a large number of discordant sounds that deviate from the melody line are used at the register level, which is an extreme contempt for all traditional music. At the level of lyrics and performance concept, it shows the desolation of life and love. From the rejection of the real state, and then pursue the strange pleasure of the soul abyss.

architectural style

Gothic architecture is an architectural style that originated in France in the second half of the 1 1 century and was popular in Europe from 13 to15th century. Mainly seen in Catholic churches, it also affects secular buildings. Gothic architecture occupies an important position in the history of architecture with its superb technical and artistic achievements.

The structural system of Gothic church consists of stone skeleton coupons and flying buttresses. Its basic unit is to make a double-center skeleton tip coupon on the pillars at the four corners of a square or rectangular plane, one on each side and one on the diagonal, and the roof slate is supported on the coupon to form a vault. In this way, coupons with the same height can be made on different spans, and the vault is light in weight and clear in intersection, which reduces the thrust of the coupon foot and simplifies the construction.

The flying crib is issued by the pier outside the side hall to balance the lateral thrust of the arch foot in the middle hall. In order to increase stability, minarets are often built on column piers. Due to the use of pointed vouchers, pointed arches and flying buttresses, the interior space of Gothic churches is spacious, simple and unified. Ornamental details such as canopies and niches are also themed with sharp coupons, and the architectural style and structural techniques form an organic whole.

Ordinary clothes

Gothic spirit

It is not easy to define a clear ideological system for Gothic subculture, mainly for several reasons. First, mood and aesthetics play a very important role. Some of them are inspired by romanticism and neo-romanticism. Dark, mysterious and morbid impressions and emotions also exist in traditional romantic Gothic novels. At the end of18th century and19th century, the sense of terror and fear of the supernatural generally existed in popular literature and continued into modern horror movies. Another core element of Gothic is comic exaggeration and self-dramatization, which appears in Gothic novels and Gothic subcultures.

Members of Gothic subculture generally do not support violence, but tolerate it. Many media wrongly associate Gothic subculture with violence, hostility towards ethnic minorities, white supremacy and other hatred. However, violence and hatred are not elements of Gothic thought. On the contrary, some Gothic thoughts are composed of the evil cognition, understanding and grief of society or individuals that mainstream culture hopes to ignore or forget. This is also a common theme in Gothic music. [6]

The second reason that hinders the clear definition of Gothic thought is Gothic's aversion to politics. In the19th century, it was a very bold thing for individuals to despise social norms, but it was far less radical than it is today. Therefore, the resistance of Gothic subculture is limited, and it absorbs the image of western core culture. Different from hippies or punk movements, Gothic subculture does not spread political information or call for social movements, but emphasizes individualism, tolerance for diversity, creativity, intellectualism, aversion to social conservatism and moderate cynicism, but these thoughts are not applicable to all members. Gothic thought is mainly based on aesthetics, not morality or politics.

Of course, Goths have their political tendencies, from social liberalism to anarchism, but they will not be particularly manifested and become part of their culture. On the contrary, political stance, like religion, is considered to be related to personal ideas. Unlike punk, only a few people's political positions conflict with "Gothic" identity.

As a Goth, being in a subculture is extremely valuable, and you can realize your personal ambitions, especially those related to creation. However, it is also risky, especially for young people. Part of the reason is the negative perception caused by the public's misunderstanding of Gothic subculture. The value that young people find in sports can be proved by the persistence of Gothic subculture, while other subcultures (such as the neo-romantic movement) in the 1980s have disappeared.
