Appreciation of the movie Crossroads

Through the different thoughts, personalities and life paths of four unemployed university graduates, the film created three different types of typical characters. Xiao Xu was depressed and cowardly, with no way out, and embarked on the road of suicide. Contrary to Xiao Xu, Liu Dage is a young man with brains and ideals. He wants to return to his occupied hometown, "to arouse the oppressed slaves." Zhao Dan plays Lao Zhao in the film, and makes the image of an inexperienced, childlike, warm and simple, and a little silly natural, vivid and free and easy.

At the same time, the film also successfully explored the film language. Shen Xiling summed up the "special skills of film" in "After Shooting (Female Call)" written by 1933, and briefly described how to break the creed of "three unifications" of stage, lens movement, picture composition, lens combination, rhythm and climax, and asked herself to "find my new way through mistakes". By the time 1937 filmed Crossroads, its mature use of dynamic film language, such as the composition of pictures, the combination of shots and the composition of sound and pictures, had become one of the highest achievements of China's sound films in the 1930s.
