How to develop photos by yourself

Darkroom: Any room that can block the light can be used as a darkroom , such as your own bedroom, storage room or bathroom, etc. Windows can be covered with black cloth or other items. Working at night is also a good choice, but pay attention to moonlight, car lights on the street or other lights to avoid unnecessary losses. There should be a power source in the room, a table for the computer, and a table or workbench for the rinsing dishes. If not, the dishes can be placed on the floor. The water source is not essential. The chemicals can be prepared outside the darkroom. After the photos are fixed, they are concentrated in a dish filled with water, and then taken to a convenient place for washing. One thing to note at home is that chemicals always have a smell, so you should always open windows for ventilation and clean up after work. In a word, there are no special requirements for a darkroom, nor does it require a large space. The important thing is to be good at arranging and utilizing it.

Darkroom equipment: We list the equipment for developing film and enlarging photos together. The necessary equipment is: developing tank, film winding tray, enlarger, magnifying lens, thermometer, measuring cup, storage container, plate , clips, safety lights. In order to make your work more convenient, you may also need the following items: scissors, funnel, timer, magnification focuser, dust blower, film holder, film bag, secret bag, photo paper cutter, etc. There are two common developing tanks in China: stainless steel developing tanks and plastic developing tanks. It is recommended that you use a stainless steel developing tank. You can buy the one that can hold a 120 roll film tray, so that it can be used for both 35mm film (can develop 2 rolls at the same time) and 120 film. Compared with plastic developing tanks, stainless steel developing tanks are more durable and easier to clean, and their structure makes it easier for the liquid to flow. You may feel that the film winding disk is not easy to use at first, but you will get used to it after using it a few times. There are two types of plastic developing tanks, one using plastic tape and the other using a guide plate. The plastic tape type is cheaper and easier to use. The common brand of guide trough plate type is British Badisin, which is high in price and good in quality.

The amplifier is a relatively important piece of equipment, but there is not much room for selection in China. There are two common types: inclined bridge type and column type. When purchasing, pay attention to check whether it is stable, strong and flexible in operation. The enlarger lens functions like a camera lens and is a very critical component in the enlargement equipment. It directly affects the imaging quality of the photo. The 50mm enlarger lens is suitable for 35mm film, and the 80mm lens is suitable for 120 film. Measuring cups can be made of glass or plastic, and 1000ml is more suitable. If you can't find a suitable container to hold the solution, you can use a large empty plastic Coke bottle, which is both economical and useful. Security lights can use red or amber bulbs of around 15 watts. It is also necessary to have a hidden bag so that film development can be done in the bright room.

Chemicals for flushing: Most flushing chemicals today are sold in the form of powders or concentrated liquids that can be prepared directly. When dispensing, pay attention to the order of different drugs. Generally, when preparing the developer, completely dissolve the small bag of powder first, and then add the large bag of powder to dissolve. The bottles used to store medicinal solutions should be clean and avoid using metal containers. Remember to label each bottle to avoid confusion between medicines. It is best to label the name of the medicine and the date of dispensing, so you know which bottle is new and which bottle is about to expire. .

That’s about it for building a darkroom. If you think these are easy, then do it quickly! There are more challenging and creative tasks waiting for us to do in the future, from learning to develop and enlarge to knowing how to identify negatives, blocking and adding light, every step of the way you can experience the success and fun that photography brings to you< /p>

How to develop photos

1. Equipment and materials The development of black and white film can be completed in a bright room, so only the following equipment and materials are needed:

1. Developing tank for developing film. There are mainly two types: plastic and stainless steel. In terms of specifications, some can only develop one kind of film, and some can be adjusted to adapt to different films.

I use the AP brand plastic developing tank, which can process 1 or 2 rolls of 135/126 film, or 1 roll of 127/120/220 film at the same time, and the film rolling operation is very convenient, and the market price is 160 yuan;

2. It is best to have two plastic measuring cups, one for developing developer solution and one for fixing solution, 4-5 yuan each;

3. Thermometer for measuring the temperature of the solution , as long as it is sensitive to temperature, I use a special thermometer for darkrooms. The dial is luminous. I can’t find one for sale in Foshan at the moment. The one I use is borrowed from Brother Coyote.

4. The timer clock can be replaced by an ordinary LCD alarm clock;

5. The dark bag used for loading films in a bright room can of course be omitted if you have a dark room. The market price is medium. 35 yuan each;

6. Developer and fixer. I use Lucai HB-17 developer concentrate (35 yuan per bottle, can be used for 20-30 volumes). The fixer is the fixer. It is prepared from medicated powder. Please refer to the instructions for the specific dosage. It can be used repeatedly.

2. Preliminary work for processing

1. The process of film rolling and canning is all carried out in the secret bag. Put all the components of the developing tank, the film to be developed, and the scissors first. Put it into the secret bag, and then you can start rolling and canning. The rolling movement must be slow and even. A roll of 135 film will just use up one spool. After rolling, use scissors to cut the film. Before this step, it is best to practice several times in a bright room with used film to get proficient, so that you will not fail in the official production. The film is positioned through the spool track and the rewinding films are isolated from each other to ensure that the developing solution can flow freely and evenly between the film gaps:

2. Preparation of the developing solution : I use Lucky SHD100 black and white film, so I chose Lucky’s HB-17 concentrated developer. You can choose different dilution ratios according to the actual situation. Generally, there are instructions on the bottle containing the potion. I chose the plan of 1:12/24±1/5 minutes and 30 seconds. Because using an AP tank to develop two rolls of film requires 650ml of liquid solution, it can be calculated as 50ml of concentrate + 600ml of clean water. I used tap water. Of course, if the requirements are high, you can use distilled water. Preparation of fixing solution: I used fixing powder. 10 measuring spoons + 650ml water. You can prepare it according to the specific instructions. Here, I would like to remind everyone that if it is prepared from fixing powder, add water evenly and stir to dissolve while adding water, otherwise it will easily cause the powder to agglomerate.

3. Film Processing Steps After the preparation of the medicine is completed, film processing can begin. This is also the most critical step. First measure the temperature of the developer to make sure it is consistent with the nominal temperature. At that time, I measured that the room temperature was 23°C, which basically meets the flushing requirements. If it is summer or very cold winter, there will be no problem in an air-conditioned room. If not, the temperature of the potion needs to be adjusted with ice cubes or hot water. If the development temperature is higher than the standard development temperature provided by the film manufacturer, excessive development will occur. The density contrast of the film will increase, the particles will become coarser, and the fog will increase. If the development temperature is low, it will cause insufficient development and the film will become flat. Gray and soft, unless you need to achieve special effects, it is not recommended to violate the development temperature requirements. After the temperature is right, you can pour the liquid into the developing tank. There is a water injection hole on the top of the developing tank, and the injection process must be even. The timer can start as soon as the potion is injected. Generally, it takes 30-60 seconds to inject all 650ml of potion, and the potion should be stirred continuously for the first minute after pouring. There is a rotatable stirring rod on the top of the AP tank, which can drive the film shaft to move up and down in the tank. If the tank you are using does not have this device, you have to pick up the whole tank and shake it. Then stir for 5-10 seconds every 1 minute until the development is completed. Such operating requirements are to enable the liquid to fully contact the film and completely complete the development chemical reaction. Since it takes about 30-60 seconds to pour out the potion after development, you should start pouring out the potion half a minute before the end. Development temperature is important, but so is development time. Because the development time is too long, the density and contrast of the film will increase. If the development time is too short, the film will be underdeveloped. Although modern black and white films have a certain tolerance, improper temperature and time control during the development process will still affect the tone and gradation of the film. Immediately after development, pour clean water into the developing tank, stir continuously for 1 minute, and then pour out the clean water. Then pour the prepared fixer into the developing tank, stir continuously for 1 minute, and then stir every 1 minute. Fixing takes about 10 minutes at 20°C. The higher the temperature, the shorter the fixing time. The lower the temperature, the longer the fixing time. The requirements are not very strict. In my case at 23°C, the fixing time was 9 minutes.

4. After the film development step and fixation are completed, it can be washed with water. The purpose is to completely remove the residual liquid on the film so that the film can be stored for a long time. Open the lid of the developing tank, place it under the faucet, connect a hose to the faucet, insert the other end into the center of the film spool, open the faucet and rinse with moderate running water for 20-30 minutes. In the final clean water at the end of washing, add one to two drops of dish soap as a wetting agent, and stir thoroughly for half a minute to complete the washing process. The purpose of this is to eliminate water stains that may form on the film.

5. Drying of the film: Hang the film in a ventilated and dust-free room, and clamp a clip with a certain weight on the lower end of the film to prevent the film from curling during the drying process. Use a soft, wet sponge to gently wipe away excess moisture from both sides of the film to ensure that the film dries quickly and evenly.
