Coral is the longest-lived animal. The age of most animals is difficult to judge, but corals are an exception, because corals pile up to form looser or tighter bones according to the changes of seasons. If the bone is further sliced, it can be found by X-ray photography that it has a tree-like ratio of light and dark rings, from which scientists can calculate the age of corals. In fact, the growth rate of coral is very slow, and the annual growth rate is only about one centimeter. Therefore, corals 50 to 60 cm high underwater have actually survived for at least half a century.
