Problems needing attention in underwater photography

1, the best shooting time is around noon.

When shooting underwater, the camera needs a protective cover. It is best to shoot underwater in sunny noon, because at this time, the sun is above, and the sun shines almost vertically on the water surface, with little reflection and the strongest light in the water.

2. Pay attention to the refraction of light by water.

Never think that the distance you see underwater is the actual distance. Because the refraction of water to light is about 1.33 times that of air to light, the object in water looks 1.25 times larger than the actual volume, and the sight distance is about 25%. For a scene that looks 0.75 meters underwater, the actual distance is about 1 meter. Don't have illusions when focusing manually.

3. It is appropriate to choose medium and high speed film.

Because of the weak light in the water, it is difficult to swim in the water and stabilize the camera, so it is difficult to solidify the picture with low-speed film. Although this problem can be solved by using fast films above ASA 800, the image grain is coarse and the color reproduction is not ideal. Therefore, it is more appropriate to use ASA 200 to ASA400 medium-speed film.

4. The auxiliary light source is indispensable.

When the water depth is about 10 meter, only auxiliary light sources such as flash lamps can be used to ensure the correct color reproduction of photos.

5. Be as close to the subject as possible.

No matter how transparent water is, there are suspended particles. The farther away from the subject, the worse the definition of the photo. So try to use a wide-angle lens and shoot close to the subject.

6. Pay attention to the shooting angle

Try to avoid the camera shooting directly down, because it is smooth at this time, and the photos taken lack layering and contrast. The best shooting angle is equal to or lower than the subject. At this time, the illumination is side light or side backlight, and the photos taken have distinct layers and moderate contrast.
