China's first real-life garden Kunqu opera "The Peony Pavilion" is co-produced by the famous musician Tan Dun and the "Kunqu Opera Prince" Zhang Jun***, and is joined by the famous dancer Huang Doudou and other top domestic artists in various fields. The real-life garden Kunqu opera "The Peony Pavilion" presents the masterpiece "The Peony Pavilion" by Tang Xianzu, a great writer in the Ming Dynasty, with real scenes and real emotions, restoring the ancient Chinese tradition of hospitality of "Guests are treated with musical instruments, and a wealthy family has pure charm". The creative team abandoned the modern frame-style stage and complicated theater-style presentation, returned the Peony Pavilion to the garden, and gave Tang Xianzu the most authentic and pure peony dream. The real-life garden opera "The Peony Pavilion" was launched at the Zhujiajiao Garden in Shanghai during the 2010 Shanghai World Expo and has been performed for more than 130 performances in four seasons. In November 2012, it successfully performed six consecutive shows at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, kicking off its world tour.

Since 2010, this version of the kunqu opera “Peony Pavilion” has been performed in a century old garden in Zhujiajiao, a water town in the suburbs of Shanghai. This garden version preserves the essence and sublime beauty of traditional Kunqu opera theatre, while bringing the audience a unique, contemporary sensory experience. Described by the New York Times as “Shanghai's version of Shakespeare in the Park”, it was performed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2012.
