What is the significance of HDR for mobile photography? What's the effect?

When traveling, we always try to take a very foreign and beautiful photo with our mobile phone, but there are some small mistakes every time, but every time we take a photo, we will see that there is an HDR in the function of the mobile phone. What is this function?

Sometimes we try, but it seems useless. Maybe you can't use it. In fact, this function is a necessary function for taking pictures when traveling.

Then, Bian Xiao will popularize the HDR in this mobile phone photo for everyone. What does this mean? What's the use!

What is HDR function?

The letter HDR is HighDynamic in English.

The abbreviation of Range, these three English words mean "high dynamic range". So what is high dynamic range? Let me give you an example to make you understand.

When we take pictures with a certain light difference ratio, if we take care of the high-light area, the details of the dark area will be lost; If we deal with the dark areas, the highlights will be overexposed.

At this time, we can solve this problem by turning on the HDR function of the mobile phone camera. The HDR function will take several photos with different exposures, handle the light and shade, and remove the details.

Overexposed photos are taken in dark places-with rich details, the middle tone is normal exposure, and underexposed photos are taken in bright places-with rich details, and finally a normal exposure photo is synthesized.

HDR function can improve image quality.

If shooting in dark conditions, turning on HDR function can effectively improve the image quality. Because the weakest part of mobile phone photography is the "dark light", you can try to enlarge the photos taken in the dark environment, and then you will find that the photos are very smeared.

Although this kind of smearing can make the noise of the photo less obvious to a certain extent, it will make the details of the photo lose.

The HDR function is to combine multiple photos with different exposures into a photo with rich details and accurate exposure. When different photos are exposed, the details of each area in the photos are naturally different. Therefore, combining multiple photos with different exposures can not only get accurate exposure, but also improve the details of the photos.

By zooming in, we can find that photos taken without HDR function are smeared after zooming in; After the HDR function is turned on, the details of the photos are richer and the colors change to some extent.

HDR function is suitable for shooting scenes.

HDR function is not suitable for shooting all scenes. Only suitable for shooting some scenes. Here are several scenarios suitable for turning on HDR.

① Taking landscape photos: When taking landscape photos with a mobile phone, because there is a certain contrast between the sky and the ground, the camera of the mobile phone can't handle this contrast well at present. At this time, you need to turn on HDR to shoot, so that you can keep the details of the sky without making the ground look too dark.

2 Shooting portraits in the sun: Shooting portraits in the sun with a mobile phone often produces shadows, glare and some discordant effects. HDR function can eliminate these disharmonious factors and make people look better.

③ Low light backlight scene: If the background is bright, the photo will be very dark. The HDR function can brighten dark areas without weakening the light of photos. In addition, turning on the HDR function can shoot mobile phone photography with perfect details when backlighting.

HDR mode (right) under the backlight makes everything in the room perfectly displayed.

Scenes where HDR function is not applicable

The above mentioned scenes suitable for HDR, and then briefly talk about scenes not suitable for HDR. There are two scenes that are not suitable for HDR because they are typical.

① Moving object: If you shoot a moving object and turn on the HDR function for shooting, the HDR function will cause the subject in the photo to appear ghosting.

2 photos with high contrast: some photos with strong contrast, such as color contrast, light and dark contrast, etc. These sharp contrasts formed for various reasons look good in themselves. If you turn on the HDR function to shoot, the contrast will be reduced, which will make the photo look dull.

Turning on HDR actually reduces the color contrast.

Well, after all this, I hope everyone's photography skills can be improved, and I hope everyone can explore other hidden functions of mobile phone photography!
