The course of Fred Stein
Fred Stein was born in Dresden, Germany on July 3, 199. His father was an expert in Jewish law and his mother was a religious teacher. He is an outstanding student. As a teenager, he was active in the socialist and anti-fascist movements. At the University of Leipzig, he obtained a law degree in a relatively short time. Because he believed in socialism and opposed fascism, the Nazi German government cancelled his admission qualification for "racial and political reasons".
With the growing threat of German fascism, in 1933, Fried left Paris with his new wife Liselotte Salzburg on the pretext of honeymoon. In Paris, they met many socialists, thinkers and artists. In this favorable environment, Fried started his photography major. He and his wife bought a small camera as a joint wedding gift, and Fried began to take pictures of street scenes and life in Paris.
His early photos were taken by Hannah Arendt, Willy Brandt, Arthur Koestler and Andre Malraux. In 1939, Germany declared war on France, and Fred was taken to a shelter in the suburbs of Paris. After he managed to escape, he met his wife and children in Marseille through a secret trip, where they obtained visas and set up a rescue Committee through hard-working organizations.
On May 7th, 1941, the Fried family left France by boat. In new york, Fred continued his photography while his wife worked to support his family. He reads widely and is familiar with writers, artists, scientists, politicians and philosophers. He is an astute social observer. He wandered the streets of new york and recorded his life from Fifth Avenue to Harlem. He works well and quickly, presenting the theme as the only content, and never comes with any photographic explanation. He likes the most natural and minimal lighting, and also avoids elaborate design and dramatic effects. He doesn't have a job, he shoots in a free scene as a free man, and then provides the photos for publishers to publish in newspapers, magazines and books.
fried died in 1967 at the age of 58. His photos and reportage have appeared in newspapers, magazines and books all over the world. His works received wide attention in his lifetime, and his work is now widely recognized.
