It used to be performed by four strong men and four children aged 5-6, and now it has a history of more than 300 years.

Fengning Butterfly Dance is popular in Bajianfang Village, Heishanzui Town, Fengning Manchu Autonomous County, Chengde. It is a folk dance that Manchu people like very much. According to legend, after the Qing Dynasty made Beijing its capital, the Eight Banners were sent here to reclaim land. At that time, there were eight families and eight surnames, so the village became eight rooms.

A total of eight people are needed for the butterfly dance performance in Fengning. Four children dress up as butterflies, wear butterfly hats and trousers, and four adult men play Manchu youths (commonly known as "riding"). During the performance, four children stood on their shoulders or overhead, demonstrating various movements of butterflies and making many difficult stunts. The whole performance was completed by the ingenious cooperation of children and adults.

Butterfly dance performance is divided into two forms. One is a performance in the square, and the other is a performance of the Five Representatives. When performing in the square, the butterfly just stands on the "riding" shoulder or overhead, spreads its arms or makes "wings" or "wings" with one arm, or improvises some other actions. "Ride" around the venue, rotate your shoulders, run around the venue, and run at a balanced speed and pace.

During the stage performance, four butterflies make the same movements in the same direction at the same time, such as "boy worshiping Buddha", "golden rooster independence", "duck paddling", "what's the trouble in the sea", "Su Qin holding a sword", "carp beating", "butterfly spreading its wings" and "magpie climbing branches", which are highly technical and difficult.

Butterfly dance is accompanied by noisy clubs, and the tunes are Emergency Wind, Four or Five Heads, Victory Order, Willow New Year, Exaggerated Tone, Percussion Tone, Tongue with String Bell, Single Head, Double Head, Gu Men, Phoenix Yangko and so on. Musical instruments mainly include suona, cymbals, hand gongs, big gongs, drums, flutes and so on.

From 1966 to 1976, during the "Cultural Revolution", folk art was greatly influenced, and butterfly dance was interrupted for 10 years. 1978 After the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee of the Party, the County Cultural Bureau sent professionals to Bajianfang Village to organize the restoration and inheritance of butterfly dance. Folk artist Chen Anyou found Zhang Guiquan, Qi Yuanfeng, Qi Jiuchang and other old artists to organize meetings. Since then, the butterfly shelf has increased by 4 people, and the children have increased by 4 people, making a total of 8 people.

Wind music accompaniment has also been carefully excavated and carefully protected, so that this ancient art can be passed down and developed. As a traditional folk performance, Butterfly Dance participated in the opening ceremony of the provincial minority sports meeting and the opening ceremony of Chengde 9. 18 International Photography Competition.
