The main content of The Last Monkey Charmer

China National Geographic photographer Ma Hongjie spent a full 12 years following the story of monkey charmers in Xinye, Henan Province, one of the base camps of Chinese monkey charmers, as they traveled throughout China and in China’s border areas. The history of monkey dancing in the Han Dynasty has been written down to the last generation of monkey dancers in China.

The author traveled around the country with the monkey charmer, riding trains together, performing arts together, sleeping on the floor with the monkeys outside, recording the process of the monkey charmer getting married and having children, and also recording the monkey charmer's overseas travels. As well as various bizarre experiences of being deceived, bankrupted, and imprisoned, it reflects the current situation and changes in contemporary China from a special group. It is an epic-level humanistic photographic documentary work.
