Modern film aesthetics is now the teaching material of film major in University of Paris III.

The four authors are Jacques Aumont, professor of film aesthetics at the University of Paris III, Michel Marie, Mark Villenet and Alain Belcara, editor of film handbook. Modern film aesthetics involves semiotics, narratology, psychoanalysis and other new disciplines of film research, and covers the important thoughts of film theorists such as Hugo Mensterberg, Bela Balazs, Sergei Eisenstein, andre bazan, jean mitry, roland barthes and Christian Metz.

Modern film aesthetics transcends the limitation of time and the influence of ideology, not just a summary of what has happened. It is also a guide and forecast for the future.

The important works of film aesthetics are Bela Balazs's Film Aesthetics and andre bazan's What is a film? Siegfried kracauer's The Essence of Film, Rudolf Einheim's Film as Art, O 'nast Lin Gelun's On Film Art, Stanley Solomon's Concept of Film, Marcel Mardam's Film Language, Zhu Xiaofeng and Louis Dzhanis's Modern Film Aesthetics.

The Five C's of Cinematography by Joseph V Marcelly (this book explaining cinematography technology is actually Che Xing Li (the aesthetic principle of many films), Zhu Xiaofeng's Film Aesthetics (this book is considered as the pinnacle of the latest film theory) and so on. An Overview of the Development of Early Film Aesthetics (before 1960s) is Henry Acer's Overview of Film Aesthetics.
