Let's test this lens in the standard evaluation room of IT 168. In this resolution test, Canon EOS 5D Mark III fuselage and Canon EF 16-35mm F4L IS USM were used to shoot the ISO 12233 resolution card, and the final data was obtained by using IMATEST software. Let's look at its resolution.

According to the test results, Canon EF 16-35mm F4L IS USM can be regarded as carrying forward the consistent style of its brand, and the resolution of both the center and the edge is very balanced under all apertures, and it is kept above 2000 lines. This test data is very objective. As long as the test data exceeds 2500 and reaches 3000 lines, it is very good. Try not to use the limit aperture F22 when shooting with this lens. You can choose other apertures by yourself.

Comprehensive evaluation shows that the best resolution of wide-angle end is F5.6. Even so, F4 performs very well under the maximum aperture, so it can shoot vigorously under the large aperture, which can make the night scene shoot vigorously. Of course, F2.8 with a larger aperture would be better, but the price is there.

Judging from the test results of wide-angle resolution, the best resolution still appears on F8, but it is relatively stable under other apertures, and there is not much fluctuation, indicating that the resolution of this lens has indeed improved. However, it is still not recommended to use an extreme aperture such as F22.

In the past, the resolution of the telephoto end of the test lens generally decreased, but from the point of view that Canon EF 16-35mm F4L is USM, this common phenomenon is not prominent, and it can be kept in a horizontal line with the resolution of the wide-angle end. Therefore, this lens is not bad even if it is used to shoot humanistic themes, and strong detail expression is a good quality.

The resolution of the 35mm end was also tested in the evaluation room in one breath, and then we continued to borrow the real shot from the evaluation room to see the resolution performance of this lens at the center and edge. Judging from the above test data, the edge resolution still shows the quality of its red circle.

According to the actual investigation, the edge of Canon16-35mm F4L ISUM is indeed lower than the wide-angle edge, but it is acceptable on the whole. In my opinion, it is not possible to make a shot perfect for thousands of dollars. The resolution of 35mm end is one of its "relative weaknesses".

Test summary: After Canon 16-35mm F4 strives to improve the edge quality, it can be said that the overall picture taken by Canon16-35mm F4 will be more balanced, and there will be no situation where the center quality and the edge quality stand at two extremes like some shots. From this perspective, Canon 16-35mm F4L can be said to be a lens with a good conscience.

Canon 16-35mm F4 Anti-shake Test

Except for the edge image quality in the last resolution test, I pay attention to it. It is also very important, that is, what is the effect after anti-shake is added? Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM has added the function of IS image stabilizer, which can achieve the compensation effect of four-stage shutter speed equivalent to 1. Especially for people who have requirements for hand-held shooting and follow-up, having IS anti-shake function can save a lot of worry.

In any case, the addition of IS image stabilizer function will be of great help to the field of landscape photography often handled by wide-angle zoom lenses, or to the shooting of dim scenes such as indoors. Because we only need to test the anti-shake performance of the wide-angle end of 16mm, we can know how the overall IS anti-shake performance is, so let's start directly with its theoretical safety shutter. Judging from the test results, the effect of IS anti-shake is too obvious when shooting manually. This is especially important in the case of insufficient light. At this time, there is no need to force ISO to improve the clarity of the picture. Hand-held shooting has anti-shake function, so you can shoot with confidence.

Canon 16-35mm F4 Dark Angle Test

The loss of light in the four corners of the photo is a dark corner. For many photographers, some people like dark corners, while others don't. When it comes to this issue, different people have different opinions. For a lens, no dark corner is king, especially for a wide-angle lens. Many people don't want to have dark corners. Here, I can only tell you through tests that the dark corner of Canon 16-35mm F4 will disappear under the aperture. Knowing this, you can control whether the aperture is needed or not.

16mm dark angle test

According to the test, the dark angle of 16mm disappears completely under F8, which is very obvious under F4 and can be basically ignored under F5.6. Combined with the previous resolution test, it is suggested to shoot some large films between F5.6 and F 16.

35mm dark angle test

At 35mm, the dark angle will not be so obvious, even at F4, the light distribution will be more suitable, and at F5.6, the dark angle will disappear.

Test summary: Because the dark corner is inevitable in the lens, it is good to know at what aperture it disappears. In some environments where you think dark corners look good, turn on F4, and turn on F8 when it is not needed, so there will be no dark corners properly, which is suitable for the full focal length of this lens.

Canon 16-35mm F4 Distortion Test

Many people will say that when taking pictures, try to be horizontal and vertical, so it will look more comfortable. But the distortion of the lens, especially the distortion of the wide-angle zoom lens, is really difficult to control. However, it is also because of its barrel distortion that some photographers like it. Use its distortion to take some photos of beautiful women with long legs and some photos with strong visual impact.

In fact, you can probably feel the distortion at the wide-angle end of Canon 16-35mm F4L in the real shot, which is actually very obvious. The test results in the evaluation room also confirmed the feeling in actual shooting, and the data was -4.7 1%, which was seriously distorted.

The distortion of the 35mm telephoto end is well controlled, and the actual shooting is not obvious, and the test performance of the evaluation room is also verified accordingly. The data of pincushion distortion is 0.88% (significantly greater than 1%).

Test summary: I have to say that the barrel distortion of 16mm is really obvious, but if you can control it yourself, it is still very impressive to take very creative photos.

Canon 16-35mm F4 Glare and Ghost Test

Glare and ghost usually appear when taking backlight photos. Glare is happy and worrying. If the lens is anti-glare, the photo can retain more backlight details. Another way to control glare is to make it look good. After using Canon 16-35mm F4L, the author thinks that its glare control and ghost control are at a medium level.

Test summary: I think if the glare is not well controlled, at least make it look good. However, after many attempts to shoot in reverse light, Canon 16-35mm F4L can only reach the medium level of SLR lens under strong light and ghost.

From the actual shooting proofs, the Jiao Wai performance of 16mm and 35mm lenses is not soft, which belongs to the general background blur effect. This is related to its lack of large aperture and focal length. This is not the advantage of wide-angle zoom lens, at least not the advantage of this small ternary lens.
