abstract

Two thousand years ago, Qin Shihuang searched everywhere for elixir of life, listened to the words of the local soil, and summoned 500 boys and girls to sea. The doctor made Meng fall in love with the one who was elected to the palace, which violated the precepts. Before Dong Er set himself on fire, he gave Tian Fang the elixir in The Scholars, while Tian Fang was made into a figurine of A Qin to protect future generations. Two thousand years later, Zhu Lili, an actress in a film crew, wanted to be the heroine, but she was framed and crashed into the imperial tomb and the resurrected Tian Fang. What happened two thousand years ago is just an ancient dream. Lily, who looks exactly like Dong Er, reunited with Tian Fang in the chaos, and Tian Fang was also looking for old love, faithfully waiting for the imperial tomb.

Film interpretation

About the film

At the foot of a mountain in Lintong County, Shaanxi Province (now Lintong District, xi), rows and rows of people lined up neatly, almost identical faces, kneeling or standing, wearing armor, without a trace of audible sound. This is the grave, Ying Zheng's grave. Ying Zheng, the first emperor in ancient China, is hard to say what kind of emperor he was. Too many things have happened in his life. Before his death, Ying Zheng had built an unprecedented tomb for himself, in which there were more unprecedented terracotta warriors and horses to protect the tomb, and recruited people to refine the elixir of life. The film begins with the construction of that tomb. Meng, a standard Hong Kong martial arts figure, I wonder if Zhang Yimou likes this new name. Even the name is deliberately vulgar. Meng angered the king of Qin because of his indulgence with virgins, and was made into pottery figurines to protect the Qin Mausoleum for generations. In the last kiss, Dong Er vomited the immortal Dan into Meng's mouth, and then jumped into the sea of fire. Feelings are still there, for two thousand years. Time flies to the 1930s. A plane opened the huge tomb and awakened a dream that had been sleeping for two thousand years. The most ridiculous thing is the woman in the plane-Lily. Lily, who looks like Dong Er, just entered the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor with the plot of grave robber Bai Yunfei and the falling plane. Meng disillusioned and pursued in his heart. Although Lily turned a blind eye to this eccentric "Qin man", Meng still took Lily as her. Just as I was drooling over the huge wealth of the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor, I tried to smuggle these treasures. When I saw through the trick of stealing the Mausoleum on the train, deus ex returned to the Mausoleum and launched a tragic war with a group of grave robbers in Bai Yunfei. Lily finally understood everything, and she decided to accept Meng. At this time, Meng also understood that Lily was not a dead one. In the mausoleum, Lily was killed to save Meng as usual. Finally, all the thieves were wiped out by the Terracotta Warriors, and Meng was separated from (Lily) again. The ending of the film is very dramatic. After 40 years, the Qin Mausoleum was finally presented to the world, and Meng became the first restoration engineer of the Qin Terracotta Warriors Museum, still as young as Qin. Terracotta Warriors and Horses attracted a large number of tourists from home and abroad to Xi 'an, and Dong Er (Lily) was reborn into this world again and became a Japanese girl, Shizuko Yamaguchi. As a tourist, she stopped in front of the huge terracotta warriors and horses to admire this huge army, and she recognized at a glance that she was loyal (Lily) that year. ...

Star interpretation

The Battle of Ancient and Modern Figurines is the first time that Zhang Yimou has cooperated with Hongkong. He witnessed the operation and publicity of Hong Kong films, which was also the beginning of a venture, because China, a planned economy in the 1980s, was not ready for the start of film industrialization, and commercial films had become an irreversible trend, which would sooner or later hit the door of traditional films in China. In China, a director's growing experience is very long, some of which are like business investment. It takes countless movies to make a positive result, which often requires them to start from art films and step by step to commercial films to create opportunities for themselves. When the opportunity comes, they will return to art films and show their true selves. Zhang Yimou became famous as an art film, which laid a solid foundation for himself. Perhaps "Love of Ancient and Modern Figurines" is Zhang Yimou's first contact with commercial operation. Cooperation with Hong Kong filmmakers will definitely bring Zhang Yimou's vision to a broader space. For a China director, this is an important step forward. After all, China movies in the 1980s are moving forward. 1989 Judou is another opportunity for Zhang Yimou to cooperate with other countries. Japanese films in Kurosawa era left a deep imprint on the hearts of China people, and the aesthetic artistic style of Japanese films was brought into the life of traditional China people in the 1920s. Zhang Yimou's early two foreign cooperation may only be imperceptible in consciousness, and his style has not been fundamentally changed. However, the appearance of Hero is the real beginning of commercial films in Zhang Yimou. While enjoying this art commercial film carefully, although we know that Zhang Yimou has made a commercial film that can be shortlisted for the Oscar, he will return to the art film in the future. At present, Zhang Yimou has no chance and conditions to realize his own art films. He is submerged in the torrent of business, and one day Zhang Yimou will make an art film that belongs to China and himself.

Plot interpretation

After watching the movie, it suddenly reminded me of Jet Li's masterpiece Adventure King. The plots are somewhat similar, and the leap of the times has become two things in common, especially at the end, when lovers of the same period appeared in the real society. This kind of love that spans time and space can withstand the polishing of years and will never die, which has become the theme of the film. However, the love of ancient and modern heroes is not as wonderful as Adventure King, Zhang Yimou's kung fu is definitely not as perfect as Jet Li's humor, and Gong Li is not as lovely as Rosamund Kwan. She is more provocative and coquettish in the film, which may be the first time that Gong Li has been so indulgent and playful. The Gong Li we saw on the screen before will always be a serious and simple drama image.

Recommendation: ★★★★★☆.

Up and down for three thousand years. Time has changed, but truth will never change. Li Bihua's novels are far from Jin Yong's martial arts, but they are all slightly simple stories with the flavor of storytelling, which may be more suitable for some hazy people in China in the 1980s. Actually, Zhang Yimou wouldn't make such a movie. He probably wouldn't make it at all, because at that time, art movies were his life. "Red Sorghum" once tied Zhang Yimou and art films together, but Zhang Yimou didn't want to see too many commercial factors. It seems that most people living in the 1980s have not fully understood what a market economy and a commodity society are. Maybe the filmmakers in China didn't completely treat movies as commodities and industries like Hollywood. From the simple name "The Battle of Terracotta Warriors and Horses in Ancient and Modern Times", we can know that this is not an authentic style, but more like an old-fashioned Hong Kong martial arts film and a second-rate work without much new ideas. Therefore, it is natural for Cheng Xiaodong, who has rich experience in action movies, to make this style of film. That year, Zhang Yimou was 37 years old, a standard northwest man, but not very handsome. It seems appropriate to play a nice guy, but to play a hero with high martial arts skills always feels that he lacks some tall and powerful male charm, and the emotional drama in the film is somewhat incisive. In the final analysis, it is the influence of art films on Zhang Yimou.
