Baoji is an ancient city full of historical allusions in the west of Guanzhong, Shaanxi Province. It is the hometown of Yan Di, the ancestor of China, and the birthplace of Zhou and Qin Dynasties. Known as "the hometown of Yan Di, the hometown of bronzes, the sacred place of Buddhist bones and the hometown of folk art".

Baoji, formerly known as Chencang, was named after Chencang Mountain. More than two thousand years ago, Qin Wengong built the "Chencang City" here. After Qin Shihuang unified the Seven Kingdoms, Chencang County was established here. It was renamed Baoji County in the Tang Dynasty, and the name of this place is still in use today.

The history of Baoji can be traced back to ancient Huang San. According to legend, Emperor Yan, one of the ancestors of the Chinese nation, was born in Yu Meng, Baoji. According to research, there are three original Shennong shrines in Baoji, among which Shennong shrines in Jiulongquan are the most spectacular. Nine-Dragon Spring, the spring gives nine points, and its water is clear, transparent and sweet. The site is located in Yuquan Village, Shennong Township, south bank of Weihe River in Baoji.

Baoji has been an important town in Guanzhong since ancient times. This is where the story of Han and Liu Bang's "building a plank road in the open and crossing Chen Cang in the dark" happened. Chen Cang was renamed Baoji during the Anshi Rebellion in the Tang Dynasty. At first, Tang Susong changed Chencang County to Fengxiang County. Later, because there was always a "Baoji crow" on Jifeng Mountain in the south of the city, Tang Susong thought it was auspicious, so he changed Fengxiang to Baoji and renamed Chencang County Baoji County. Since then, Baoji, an auspicious and beautiful place name, has been used.

At present, Baoji City has jurisdiction over three districts: Jintai, Weibin and Chencang. It has jurisdiction over Fengxiang, Qishan, Fufeng, Meixian, Longxian, Qianyang, Linyou, Fengxian and Taibai. The city covers an area of 1.82 million square kilometers, with a total population of 3.75 million, including 750,000 urban residents.
