Plateau road builders: Chen's story

Chen is one of our tens of thousands of road construction officers and soldiers. Like Chen, in the process of building Tianshan Highway, thousands of road-building officers and soldiers encountered "danger", and my company also experienced the dilemma of "running out of ammunition and food". 1977 During March and April, when our company was building the north entrance of Bingda Banha Shergen Tunnel, it snowed continuously for five days and nights. The snow on the flat was more than two meters thick, so we couldn't get up and maintain the car, and the contact was interrupted. The company faces a meal break. We arrange the food that lasts only a few days according to 1 month, change three meals a day into two meals, and change dry rice into porridge. Later, there was not enough porridge, so I had to drink some salty noodles to satisfy my hunger. After the regiment learned of our plight, we camped and waited for rescue, but the soldiers said that we would go up the mountain to build. What is staying in a tent? Everyone insisted on going to the construction site. Except for arranging some people to dig the snowy road from one mountain to another, the other soldiers rushed to the construction site hungry. If the machinery can't come, you can come by hand with a shovel and steel; If the car can't walk, it will be lifted by people, and 290 tons of explosives and 1500 tons of cement will be transported from the bottom of the ditch to the hillside construction site.

/kloc-more than 0/0 days have passed, and we are facing a new test: the company's coal has burned out! In the tent of ice and snow, soldiers not only can't make a fire to keep warm, but even cooking has become a big problem. The company decided to stop work for 3 days to mobilize everyone to dig snow and collect firewood under the Xuefeng. But where can there be firewood on the hillside that is almost covered with snow all year round? We worked hard to dig a few meters of snow, but only got a few handfuls of hay, such as camel bones, which was not enough to melt half a pot of snow. There's nothing we can do. The company is cruel. We collected the tables, chairs and wooden boxes we brought and cooked separately. Finally, we took out the sleeping bed board and burned it in half. Two or three of us huddled in a bunk to sleep. At a low temperature of MINUS 20 or 30 degrees Celsius, there is no firewood in the tent to make a fire. Afraid of frostbite, cadres take turns to be on duty, wake the soldiers several times before going to bed, exercise and increase body heat. On the 24th day, when the road was completed, the deputy head led the proficient company to deliver grain and firewood to the construction site. Our company has built a pilot tunnel of more than 3,200 meters and dredged the construction access road of 10 kilometers, exceeding the tasks assigned by the regiment. The deputy head saw that our eyes were red and swollen like peaches, our faces were black and blue, the skin as big as copper coins fell off one by one, our lips were cracked with blood, and everyone's eyes were deep. At that time, he hugged us and cried.

During the 10 years since the Tianshan Highway was built, 183 comrades-in-arms were buried in Tianshan Mountain, and thousands of officers and men were injured and disabled. They integrated their youthful years and young lives into the long Tianshan highway and condensed into the "Tianshan spirit."

Over the past 35 years, officers and men of our Corps have been quietly fighting in the north and south of the motherland and constantly expanding their roads in the main battlefield of economic construction. Bridges and avenues distributed on the territory of the motherland are silent monuments forged by road-building officers and soldiers with loyalty, youth, wisdom and sweat. Last June, thousands of officers and men of our Corps went to Tianshan again, following in Chen's footsteps, and shouldering the most arduous and dangerous construction task in the reconstruction project of Tianshan Highway. The officers and men strive to carry forward Chen's spirit of building roads and continue to write a new chapter in the spirit of Tianshan Mountain.
