Zhang Yimou, born on April 2, 1950 in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, is a Chinese film director and one of the representatives of the "fifth generation of directors". He holds honorary doctorates from Boston University and Yale University, and is a distinguished professor at the Beijing Film Academy.

In 1978, he entered the Photography Department of Beijing Film Academy to study. After graduation in 1982, he was assigned to Guangxi Film Studio. In 1984, he served as a cinematographer for the first time in the movie "One and Eight" and won the China Film Outstanding Cinematographer Award. In 1986, he starred in his first movie "Old Well" and won three Best Actors. The first film "Red Sorghum" directed in 1987 won the Golden Bear Award at China's first international film festival.

Early experience

From 1957 to 1962, Zhang Yimou studied at Tongjifang Primary School in Xi'an. From 1962 to 1966, he studied at Xi'an No. 30 Middle School. From 1968 to 1971, after graduating from junior high school, he worked in rural areas of Qian County, Shaanxi Province.

From 1971 to 1978, he worked as a worker in the No. 8 Cotton Spinning Factory in Xianyang City, Shaanxi Province. In September 1978, after the college entrance examination was resumed, he made an exception and entered the photography department of Beijing Film Academy to study. After graduating in July 1982, he worked as a photographer at Guangxi Film Studio, and his household registration was transferred to Nanning, Guangxi.

His films integrate national culture, social thinking, cultural roots and film innovation. He persistently explores the potential of film language, pursues the strength of composition, richness of ideas and fullness of color.
