Where are the largest jellyfish distributed?
When the comb jellyfish swims in the sea, it emits blue light, which is very beautiful. At present, biologists in Singapore are conducting an experiment to transplant the luminescent genes of jellyfish to other fish.
A few years ago, the American World Wildlife magazine summarized the opinions of scholars from all over the world and listed the ten most poisonous animals in the world, among which the marine animal box jellyfish living in the ocean topped the list. Box jellyfish, also known as sea wasps, are coelenterates, mainly living in the coastal waters of northeast Australia and often floating in the shallow waters near the Queensland coast. An adult box jellyfish the size of a football is mushroom-shaped and almost transparent.
On both sides of its body, there are two primitive eyes, which can feel the change of light, and more than 60 ribbon tentacles are dragged behind it. These tentacles are deadly, and they can extend beyond 3 meters. On each tentacle, capsules are densely arranged, and each capsule has a hollow "poisonous needle" that is invisible to the naked eye and full of venom. There are billions of poison sacs and needles on the tentacles of an adult box jellyfish, enough to kill 20 people, which shows its great toxicity and ferocity. Its antennae have receptors, which can identify protein on the epidermis of fish, shrimp or human. After finding the prey, the box jellyfish quickly floated over, wrapped the prey firmly with tentacles, and immediately sprayed the venom with a poisonous needle. Once the venom is sprayed on people, there will be many bright red scars on the skin immediately, and the venom will soon invade people's hearts, killing people in just two or three minutes, and there is no time to rescue them. Why is the box jellyfish so toxic? It is not clear at present, but researchers have found that its venom mainly damages the heart. A healthy person's heart has millions of muscle cells, all of which beat in the same rhythm.
The study also found that acetic acid can kill the tentacles of box jellyfish, so scientists suggest that tourists who go swimming and diving in Queensland bring a bottle of vinegar to use when they meet box jellyfish. However, scientists are analyzing the structure of box jellyfish venom, hoping to make a good medicine to prevent it from causing another death accident.
