What are the types of light reflections and what does it have to do with photography?

diffuse reflection

Objects reflect evenly in all directions, and the light emitted by the light source is called diffuse reflection. White paper will diffuse reflection, so from all positions, paper is white. Generally speaking, objects with rough surfaces are prone to diffuse reflection.

Specular reflection

Also called specular reflection, we can clearly see the mirror image reflected on the mirror, and the incident angle of light is equal to the reflection angle. If the light source shines on the mirror at a 45-degree angle from the left, the light will be reflected at a 45-degree angle from the right, so if we change the angle or position between the camera and the object when shooting the mirror, the image reflected by the mirror will be very different.

Glare reflection

Also known as polarized reflected light, it is an electromagnetic wave that constantly vibrates. Natural light shines evenly in all directions, and the direction of light propagation is the direction of electromagnetic wave propagation. When the vibration direction of electromagnetic wave is misaligned or asymmetrical with the propagation direction of light, a non-metallic surface with smooth polarized light will be formed, which will produce glare at a certain angle. This glare is polarized light. We can use a polarizer to filter out polarized light and effectively eliminate it. Leaves on sunny days and buildings on the lake are all objects that are easy to produce polarized light.
