Behind-the-scenes highlights of squid and whale fish

The film started shooting in the summer of 2004, and Baumbach led the film crew to the old site where he lived as a child in Brooklyn. When filming his middle school, Baumbach found that the then English department head had become the principal, and he was very happy to help his students film. In fact, many locations in the film were provided by Baumbach's childhood friends, including the Bernard family's residence, which was the home of their childhood friends Ben and Molly. The clothes that Jeff Daniels wore in the movie were those of Baumbach's father.

Baumbach was worried about a scene shot in a museum, because not only was the museum not allowed to shoot, but the same scene in spider-man 2 was offered a sky-high price. But the crew was lucky and the shooting process went smoothly unexpectedly.

It took only 23 days to shoot the whole film, and a super 16 mm handheld camera was used. The rough texture of this camera can make the picture find the characteristics of the 1980s. In contrast, the popular DV is obviously powerless to this effect. In addition, the super 16mm camera can also explain Baumbach's nostalgia for movies. When he was in middle school, he was fascinated by the films of Cohen Brothers, Jim Jia Mouche and Spike Lee. In many films directed by these masters, this super 16mm camera is used.

Talking about the origin of this film, Baumbach said that it began with childhood memories in Brooklyn, new york, but the original idea was that two brothers in their thirties were facing the story of their parents' divorce. Later, he saw the film Curiosity directed by louis malle at 197 1 and was inspired to turn adults into teenagers. This change of perspective undoubtedly aggravated the despair of the film.

The script was written as early as 2000. At that time, laura linney, who was filming "Happy House", just read the manuscript and agreed to act, but the wait was four years, because Baumbach didn't pay enough for the filming until 2004.
