Can focusing and metering be separated?

Of course it is!

Focusing is to determine the focus of shooting, and photometry is to determine the luminosity of the subject and determine the exposure index.

Only when shooting close-ups of people and a single still life, the focus coincides with the point that needs accurate photometric exposure, and these two things can be completed at one time. In many other cases, if it is a serious shooting, it will be considered separately. Generally, different parts of the picture are measured first, and the balanced exposure parameters are selected according to the intention to be expressed, and then the focus is selected according to the shooting purpose.

Of course, today's cameras are becoming more and more automatic, simply overlapping the focusing and metering points directly, and introducing multi-point focusing and balanced (matrix) metering in a more complicated way. More advanced cameras will preset some scenes to provide a combination of various focusing and metering methods.
