The full-length 160 mm juvenile giant salamander has no obvious skin folds and wart grains on its side. When living, the body color changes greatly, generally brown, and its variation colors are dark, reddish brown, brown, light brown, loess color, taupe and light brown. There are irregular black or dark brown markings on the back and abdomen, and there are also inconspicuous markings.

Larvae and immature secondary adults are light in color, mainly light brown with scattered small black spots; The abdomen is shallow; There are many bright spots on the outside of the limbs. Albino individuals found in Yichang, Hubei Province all have silvery white or yellow tails.
