The body surface is smooth and moist; The small wart grains on the back and ventral surface of the head are arranged in pairs; The wart grains around the orbit are arranged neatly and intensively, the top of the head and the middle part of the throat, the upper and lower lip edges are smooth and without warts, and the wart grains below the orbit, behind the mouth and on the neck side are arranged in rows; The thick longitudinal skin folds on the side of the body are obvious, and the upper and lower wart grains are larger; Other parts of the skin are smoother. The full-length 160 mm juvenile giant salamander has no obvious skin folds and wart grains on its side. When living, the body color changes greatly, generally brown, and its variation colors are dark, reddish brown, brown, light brown, loess color, taupe and light brown. There are irregular black or dark brown markings on the back and abdomen, and there are also inconspicuous markings.

Larvae and immature secondary adults are light in color, mainly light brown with scattered small black spots; The abdomen is shallow; There are many bright spots on the outside of the limbs. Albino individuals found in Yichang, Hubei Province all have silvery white or yellow tails.
