The Sound of Music related materials

"The Sound of Music" is a dramatic work adapted from the book "En: The Story of trapp Singers" by En: Maria von trapp. It was first staged on Broadway in the form of a musical, and was later adapted into a movie, ranking third in the history of North American movies and the highest-grossing musical in history.

The play tells the story of an intern nun from an alpine monastery who got a teaching position in the Tripp family, then won the hearts of children, fell in love with a single male host, got married and formed a family band, and finally escaped from the clutches of the Nazis. Among them, many songs of the play, such as Do-Re-Mi and Edelweiss, have been sung all over the world and translated into many languages.

[Editor] Origin of Creation

The creation of "The Sound of Music" is inspired by the true story of Maria von trapp: Maria von trapp was born in the Alps and first became a nun in Benedictine Naumburg Abbey. From 65438 to 0926, due to health problems, she was sent to Sir Georg Ritter von Trapp's home by the dean for self-cultivation and part-time work. Later, Maria fell in love with Jazz and got married on 1927. They have two daughters and a man.

In the 1930' s, Jazz almost lost all his property due to the economic panic. So he and Maria led seven children to form a band to sing professionally, and won the first prize of Salzburg Music Festival in 1936. 1938, Nazi Germany merged with Austria, and Jazz rejected Nazi conscription order. In order to avoid being hunted, they took a train across the Alps to Italy in the name of camping, and then began their trip to Europe. After they moved to the United States from 65438 to 0939, they not only expanded their singing career to all parts of the world, but also held various music camps in their own "One Heart" ranch.

1956, the Tripp family singer was officially dissolved, and Maria von Tripp published her first book, Tripp Family Choir. Soon, this book was adapted into the German film Die Trapp Familie, which caused a sensation in Europe.

[Editor] About Broadway

In 1958, 43-year-old film director Vincent J. donahue introduced the story to the Broadway couple: producer Richard halliday and actress Mary Martin. The couple were very interested in the story, so they began to try to get in touch with Maria herself and get her support (although she lost the copyright of the story after being cheated by her lawyer). At that time, Maria, who was deeply Catholic, was preaching in New Guinea with her three children and had no interest in the proposal in Hudson's letter. Until one time Maria returned to the United States, she watched Mary Martin's performance "Annie Got Your Gun" on Broadway and enjoyed it very much. Since then, she strongly supported this creative plan, and Mary also agreed to donate 375% of the performance income to Maria for free. So, after obtaining the copyright from the German film company, they began to plan to re-create a brand-new musical.

Initially, this musical was designed to pay attention to the famous singing songs of Tripp family, and several songs were inserted, so halliday and his wife sought the help of richard rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II in creating famous lyrics and songs. But at their insistence, they finally adopted a new way: all the lyrics and songs in the work were re-created by the couple.

DVD cover of The Sound of Music: The picture shows the beginning of Maria singing in the Alps. The plot of The Sound of Music can be divided into three turns, telling the story of Maria, describing her internship in a monastery, coming to Tripp's house, and then escaping from Nazi control with the latter. Although characters appear in every stage, the main axis of the plot is still "music"-Maria, who is good at singing, educates the Tripp children through music and finally touches the colonel's heart, proving that music can always influence people's hearts.

Note: there are plots, endings or other related contents below, which may reduce the interest in enjoying the original work.

Maria is an intern nun in a monastery in the Alps. Unlike other nuns, naive, she always plays cards outside the mountain without following the routine in the hospital. One day, when everyone was praying, they found that Maria was late again-she had just been singing outside and didn't come back in a hurry until the bell rang.

Several nuns who had had enough of Maria came to the dean's office and decided to discuss Maria's problem. Everyone, with Maria screaming out of the predicament outside the office, after a long discussion, we finally came to a conclusion under the auspices of the dean. So Maria was called into the dean's office to talk about her future: the compassionate dean saw that this was not the place where she should live after all, and decided to let her go down the mountain and become a teacher in a family that had long asked to enter a monastery.

Maria, full of hesitation and anxiety about the future, carried her luggage and ran all the way to this family with great anxiety. In front of her eyes is a huge mansion with a beautiful garden. The owner of the house is the core figure of the Tripp family-Colonel Gail von Tripp of the Austrian Navy and his seven children born to his ex-wife. The oldest Lisa is 16, and the youngest Greta is only 5 years old. Because there is no mother, the colonel who is a mother educates her children in a strict militarized way, but the arrival of Maria has changed the whole family ...; He taught these children to sing, took them to play and taught them to perform puppet shows, thus winning their love. But on the other hand, these things gradually spread to the busy colonel's ears, but made him a little unhappy.

In fact, although the colonel has been away from home for so long, it is not all for official business: he and countess Elsa have been dating for some time, and their development is about to enter the red carpet. On the other hand, the colonel's eldest daughter fell in love with the Nazi emissary Ralph, so she often sneaked out of private meetings behind the colonel's back. However, all this gradually changed because of Maria's influence.

Finally, the colonel came back with the Countess elsa. He wants to "accept" Maria's achievements in the past few months and confirm some rumors. As a result, he was almost stunned by the children's "evil deeds": climbing trees, swimming, wearing clothes made of unwanted curtains, and Maria's contradictory words. As a result, they had a big fight and Maria was kicked out of the door by the colonel. But just as she was leaving, the children sang The Sound of Music. The beautiful song touched Colonel Leng and made him sing with beautiful songs. So Maria stayed and led the children to prepare for the dance at Tripp House next week.

The preparations for the dance were very successful, and the relationship between Maria and the colonel quickly warmed up. The child's performance won applause from the guests, but as soon as the dance was over, Maria couldn't wait to run back to the monastery. Back in the yard, Maria seems to be a different person, saying nothing all day but praying. Until one day, she finally told Sister Margaret her wish to become a full nun as soon as possible: because she found herself unconsciously in love with Colonel Tripp. In order to avoid all this, she is determined to become a devout nun. But under the guidance of the dean, Maria finally understood that her dream should not be avoided, but should be faced calmly. So Maria went back to Simp's home. At this time, the Simp family without Maria fell into deep sorrow. Not only the children miss Maria, but also the colonel's heart is fascinated by her. When Maria came back, not only the children were happy, but also the Countess elsa, who lived with the colonel, found herself unable to hold her lover's heart and quit this somewhat ambiguous triangle relationship. Soon, the colonel proposed to Maria, and she accepted this fantastic love.

After entering the auditorium, Maria and Tripp had a happy family time and were actively preparing for the performance of the music festival. But at the same time, the Nazi's clutches gradually penetrated into this family: after the merger of Nazi Germany and Austria, it began to absorb Austrian soldiers to join the Nazi camp, and the brave and patriotic Colonel Tripp was naturally a talent that the Nazis were eager to recruit. But Colonel Tripp refused to nod, so the Nazis had to use various tactics, including threats and inducements, to force the colonel to enter the concentration camp. So the colonel and Maria began to plan a secret escape plan. ...

At the music festival, everyone performed brilliantly, but the beautiful singing of the Tripp family was widely welcomed by everyone. In the applause of the audience, the Tripp family slowly disappeared on the stage ... After a while, the results of the competition were announced: the Tripp couple successfully won the championship, but they did not appear when they received the prize: it turned out that under careful arrangements, Maria and the colonel were on the run with seven children. Under the cover of nuns and Ralph, they escaped the Nazi search. Finally, with the blessing of nuns, they slowly marched towards the mountain of freedom. ...

[editor] musical

After a year's preparation, The Sound of Music was officially staged in Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in June1959165438+10/6, with Mary Martin as the heroine and Theodore Bikel as the hero. After the musical was staged, it caused a sensation. It not only performed 1443 performances in a row, but also won six Tony awards, including the best actress award and the best musical award. Because of its excellent performance, at 1960, the idea of adapting the play into a film was triggered by Flowserve Company in the 20th century.

1963 65438+1October 15 The Sound of Music was downgraded and re-adapted by Britain, Australia and other places. More than 30 years after the original play was released, 1998 was staged on Broadway for half a year until 1999 was released.

[Editor] London New Edition

198 1 year, at the request of producer rose tyler, Petula Clark agreed to star in The Sound of Music, which was re-staged at Apollo Victoria Theatre in the West End of London Theatre. Although she was worried that her heroine, 5 1 year-old, was too old and unconvincing, Clark won unanimous praise from all critics (the play also became the best box office work in the history of British theater at that time). Maria von trapp herself attended the premiere of the play and described Clark as "the best Maria ever". Due to the unprecedented demand for theater tickets, Clark extended her original six-month performance contract to three and a half years, and the weekly audience attendance rate of the play (198 1, 65438+1October 26th-1 March 3rd1day) was/. This is also the first version to put two new songs created by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein II in the film version on the stage. It is also the first time to use digital recording for its live recording, but the radio results have never been published in the form of CD.

[Edit] Other regional versions

The Australian-made version appeared in the lyric theatre of Queensland Center for the Performing Arts in Sydney, Australia. In the famous Australian TV series Blue Gilles, actor Lisa McCune plays Maria, TV celebrity Bert Newton plays Max, and John Waters plays Colonel Tripp.

1In June, 1960, 20th Century Fox purchased the copyright of the film version for12,500,000 dollars. However, according to the treaty, FOSS can't start shooting until the musical is released, 1964. However, due to the huge cost of filming Cleopatra, Flowserve has been in financial difficulties, and the industry has been rumored that it will close down on 1962. In order to save the situation, in the 20th century, Fox hired Ernest Lehman, a playwright who had adapted The King and I and west side story, as a screenwriter, and planned to find william wyler, the director who had made Roman Holiday and other films, to start shooting. However, it was obvious that Wheeler's idea could not be accepted by Lehman, so he turned to robert wise. Wise was not interested in the play, but after reading Lehman's script, he was deeply attracted and took over the directing work of the film.

The sound of music started shooting in Salzburg on 1963. Since Mary Martin was over 50 at that time and could not bear the pressure of live shooting, the production team asked sasha jackson Julie Andrews, who had appeared in My Fair Lady and the movie Happy World, to play the role of Maria. Because Julie Andrews's singing and performance are first-class, and the production team successfully used the beautiful scenery and cultural landscape of Salzburg, the film caused a sensation all over the world as soon as it was released. It not only became the second highest-grossing movie in the history at that time, but also many songs in the movie, such as Do-re-mi and Edelweiss, were adapted into singing versions in many languages. In addition, the film won 10 nominations in the Academy Awards, and finally won five awards, including best film and best director.

In order to meet the needs of the plot, the production team made many changes different from the musical version:

(1) How does love exist in musicals? How does love survive? ) and "ordinary lovers" were replaced by "my favorite things" and "beautiful things" respectively. Richard Rogers arranged the lyrics and songs of the last two films, because Oscar Hammerstein II died of cancer on August 23rd, 1960 (his last work before his death was Edelweiss, which was finished during his hospitalization).

(2) The scenes of Countess Elsa and Max in the play were greatly cut, and even the singing part was cancelled. In addition, the film also uses a lot of scenery in Salzburg and even the Alps, which makes its scene far beyond the artificial stage set in the musical.

Interestingly, the content of the film actually influenced the later adaptation of the musical version, making the homogenization of the film and musical more and more high.

[Editor] Anecdote

This musical has caused some misunderstandings about Austria: many people think edelweiss is the national anthem of that country. In fact, this song is not very popular in Austria (there is a humorous saying that was played by an Austrian representative during President Ronald Reagan's visit to the White House).

In the scene where Do-re-mi appeared in a market, there was an obvious mistake: a crate containing oranges was marked "Made in Israel", but Israel did not exist in the 1930 s. This mistake was obviously not found during the filming.

Another mistake found by keen observers who know geography is that in the scene of climbing mountains, the Tripps should be heading for a safe place, but in fact they are heading for Austria.

"I have confidence" is a song written by Rogers, as a "silhouette" for Maria to walk from the monastery to Tripp Mansion in the movie (according to him). In this scene, Maria is walking through an arch. According to the tidbits in the DVD, you can see a real Maria's daughter and "her" daughter (that is, Maria's granddaughter) preparing to cross the road in that place. In fact, the Tripps just arrived at the scene that day, and Director Wise asked them to play the role of pedestrians. It is said that when Andrew was filming, the film editor also appeared on the scene for a while, because he seemed very suitable for the role.

Because the film was well received, it became the second highest-grossing film at that time (second only to Gone with the Wind). pauline kael, a famous film critic, has been satirizing the film and calling it "the voice of money", which allegedly led to her dismissal from a magazine in mccall.

The high creative value of movies remains unchanged for 40 years. In the commentary attached to the soundtrack, Richard Rogers said after the movie: "When you start watching this movie, you will immediately say that this movie is not from the sausage factory."

In 200 1 year, the Library of Congress recognized this film as an "important cultural symbol" and selected it into the national collection of the United States.

According to the data of boxofficemojo, this movie is calculated after the box office history in North America (142,415,400 dollars) and the reference inflation (9 1 1 458,400 dollars) (following Gone with the Wind and Star Wars) If you add the world's successful box office records, videos, CDs, digital audio-visual discs and frequent TV broadcasts, it is called "the most widely watched Hollywood film creation" by Amazon Online Bookstore in Britain.

The seven children in Tripp's family are five women and two men. In the film, they are:

Lisa von trapp (16 years old, "soon to be over 17 years old") was played by Xia Min Carr, then 2/kloc-0 years old.

Frederic von trapp (14) was played by Nicholas Hammond.

Louisa von trapp (13) is played by Heather Menzies.

Kurt Von trapp (1 1 year old) is played by Du Nan Chase.

Bridget von trapp (10) is played by Angela Cartwright.

Marta von trapp (6 years old, although according to the opening line "I will be 7 years old on Tuesday!" " ") is played by Debbie Turner.

Greta von trapp (5 years old) is played by Kym Karath.

Daniel Truhitte: The actor who plays Ralph ("17 years old, almost 18 years old") is 2 1 year old. This is Zuhitt's first and last appearance on the screen.

Kim Darby and Michael Farrow sang for the role of Lisa, because Xia Min Carr, who played the role, was injured the first time he jumped over a branch on the balcony.

Jazz musician John Cortland used my favorite things as his representative melody. His version has been revised a lot, playing on the high-pitched saxophone, so that the rhythm at the beginning is repeated constantly to get rid of long-term personal improvisation.
