What is the longitudinal railway in Taiwan Province Province?
As the name implies, the railway runs through the north and south of Taiwan Province Island. It starts from Keelung in the north and reaches Kaohsiung in the south, connecting two major seaports in Taiwan Province Province, passing through cities such as Taipei, Hsinchu, Taichung, Changhua, Chiayi and Tainan, and many densely populated and developed agricultural areas on the island of Taiwan Province Province. The longitudinal railway is the traffic artery in the west of Taiwan Province Island, with a total length of more than 400 kilometers, and it is the most important railway in Taiwan Province Province.
Geographically, this railway runs through the north and south of Taiwan Province Province. Historically, the construction history of this railway also runs through the development history of Taiwan Province Province.
1885, after the establishment of Taiwan Province Province, Liu Mingchuan, the first governor of Taiwan Province Province, began to build railways in Taiwan Province Province under the influence of the Westernization Movement. 1887, Liu Mingchuan requested the approval of the Qing government at that time to officially start the railway construction plan centered on Taipei, the capital of Taiwan Province Province at that time. To 189 1, the 29-kilometer railway from Taipei to Keelung Port was completed. To 1893, complete the 7 1 km railway from Taipei to Hsinchu.
These two sections of railways are one of the earliest railways built in Taiwan Province Province and even in China. The fund for the construction of this railway was raised by the people of China1000000 taels of silver. The technical problems of railway construction are mainly solved by China people themselves. Engineers involved in railway construction, except a British consulting engineer named mcpherson, are all China engineers employed by Liu Mingchuan. It can be said that this is the first important railway built by China people themselves.
1895, the Qing government was defeated in the Sino-Japanese War and was forced to cede Taiwan Province Province to Japan. After Japanese occupation of Taiwan Province Province, in order to strengthen military occupation and economy, large-scale railway construction began. By the end of World War II, during the 50 years of Japanese rule over Taiwan Province Province, * * * built a railway of more than 1000 kilometers, of which the most important line was 1908, which was opened to traffic and ran through the western part of Taiwan Province Province. This railway is the Keelung-Taibei-Hsinchu Railway built by Liu Mingchuan.
193 1 year completed the "sea line" project in the middle section of the longitudinal line, with a total length of 82 kilometers. It turns out that most of the newly-built railways running through the northern part of Taichung pass through mountainous areas, with large slopes and many tunnels, which affect normal traffic and become a throat artery. Due to the large passenger flow, the train is pulled by steam locomotives, and the smoke and sultry weather that passengers bear in the tunnel are very threatening. The newly-built coastline is located in the west, parallel to the coastline, with gentle terrain, without going up steep slopes, not to mention passing through smoky tunnels. Corresponding to the sea line, the section of the vertical line that originally passed through the mountainous area is called the "mountain line". The coastline is flat but few towns pass by, while the rugged mountain line connects important towns such as Taichung and Miaoli. These two functions complement each other.
1974 to 1979 longitudinal line electrification. After transformation, the electric locomotive is used for railway transportation, and its speed exceeds120km. It only takes about four hours from Keelung to Kaohsiung, which is two hours shorter than before.
