Film analysis of control
The narrative time of the film changed from 1973 to 1980 when Curtis committed suicide. Before that, he was preparing to hold a sensational tour in America. Happy Team, formed during the rapid awakening of British punk, became the first band in the post-punk movement with its unique style and dark atmosphere, and still has a far-reaching influence on British rock and roll. The film mainly records Curtis's later life, his relationship with his wife and girlfriend, his struggle with epilepsy and how his band succeeded in music.
Before preparing to shoot this film, Dutch director Anton Corbin was already a world-famous rock photographer and music video director, and he was also a loyal fan of Happy Team for a long time. In the late 1970s, he began to cooperate with British singing groups and worked for many famous bands such as U2. In order to get close to his idol, Corbin moved from his hometown to England in 1979, and personally took the first photo of the happy team singing live in June of that year. It is worth mentioning that this is a black and white photo, which seems to set the tone for film control. Because Corbin and Happy Team have known each other for many years, he is also the MV director of their famous single "Atmosphere". It is because of this familiarity and close to the real film photography that Corbin can accurately capture the charm of the characters and the fascinating dark atmosphere of that era.
Record history and truth
The film is adapted from ian curtis's wife Deborah Curtis's anthology Touch from a Distance, which mainly records her time with Ian. In addition, Deborah spared no effort to be the producer of this film. However, the screenwriter of this film, Manchester writer Matt Greenhorn, is not limited to Deborah's memories. In order to ensure the authenticity of the film and hope to cover more contents, he interviewed many people related to the film, including Annike Haanel, who had never been interviewed before.
The soundtrack of the film was jointly completed by New Order, Warsaw 1970' s and the band * * * which was later renamed Happy Team. In addition, the music also used the works of Roxy Music, punk pioneer band Buzzcocks, underground velvet and other works that were in line with the situation at that time. The combination of film and music is almost perfect. When the band's own "Love Will Tear Us apart" was playing in the background music, Ian was standing in the street saying goodbye to Deborah, which made people cry.
Awaken the sleeping soul
In this film, Deborah's role is played by Oscar-nominated actress samantha morton, while ian curtis's role is played by lesser-known actress Sam Riley. Although he once played a small role in michael winterbottom's "24 Hours of Party Madness" and played mark smith, the lead singer in autumn, this is his first time to play the leading role in "Control". In real life, Sam Riley is also the lead singer of an independent band. In order to keep improving, he repeatedly watched the live video of the happy team at that time, learned ian curtis's unique robot dance posture, and took pains to study the symptoms of epileptic patients. It is because of such efforts that the role of Ian he plays can be vivid, with both spirit and flesh.
Not only the actors' performances, but also the performances of the whole movie are wonderful. This is not a story about the ups and downs of an old rock band, but a movie that can drive the emotions of all audiences, not just those who love music. "Control" shows us a mortal's struggle, that is, the takeoff and disillusionment of dreams, as well as the irresistible temptation in the face of love and the torture caused by imperfect body.
