Benchmarking of Canon 85 1.4L Portrait Lens in the Next Decade

IT 168 evaluation mentioned portrait lens, anyway, Canon 85L is an unavoidable one. From the birth of the first generation of 85 1.2L to the invincible position of the second generation of 85L in the field of portrait photography, Canon 85L lens has been the "standard" for professional portrait photographers for 20 years, and it is also the benchmark of portrait lenses in all ages. Now, a new 85 1.4L product with IS anti-shake is released, which is suitable for the high-pixel body in the new era. What is the imaging performance of this lens? Has the focusing speed improved? What changes in experience can the newly added anti-shake bring? This is the answer to this assessment.

Advantages:

1, excellent optical performance, super-resolution full aperture and excellent image quality at the center edge;

2, the focusing performance is good, and there are still snapshots;

3, add anti-shake function, indoor film production is more secure.

Regret:

There is a certain dispersion (purple edge) problem, which needs internal correction (later stage)

Evaluation summary:

To sum up, the imaging performance of this lens can be regarded as one of the best lenses I have ever used; Although its focusing performance is not as fast as that of 24-70 and 70-200 reporters, it will never make you feel the procrastination of the fuselage; It is the first to add anti-shake function to the lens of 85mm F 1.4, which seems to announce that this is the benchmark for portrait lens in the next decade.

Review of Canon 85 1.4L Portrait Benchmark Design in the Next Decade

As a professional portrait lens, the overall design style of Canon 85 1.4L is consistent with its own new generation of professional fixed-focus lenses. No wonder the editor-in-chief thought this lens was the second generation of 35L at first sight. In terms of materials and workmanship, the metal mirror body gives people a strong sense of texture, and the workmanship also makes people unable to pick faults.

Canon EF 85/ 1.4L IS USM was released on August 3 1, 20 17. It is the world's first 85mm F 1.4 lens that supports anti-shake.

The overall design style of the lens is consistent with Canon's new generation of top fixed-focus lenses.

The lens aperture is 77mm, and the standard aperture is convenient to configure the filter. At the same time, the large aperture is also helpful to improve the imaging quality of the corners.

The lens rear group is closed, which can effectively prevent dust.

There are only two buttons on the lens, one is used to switch between manual and autofocus, and the other is used to switch the anti-shake function.

The lens is equipped with a focal length window, which is convenient for manual focusing.

The focus ring has a moderate width, a firm feel and a good manual focus feel.

The 85 1.4L with hood is worth mentioning. The hood supports locking, which can effectively prevent accidental loosening during shooting.

Finally, it is in harmony with the 5D series fuselage (the fuselage used for actual evaluation is 5DSR).

Generally speaking, the Canon 85mm 1.4L is well designed, which keeps the professional lens stable.

Analytical Test of Canon 85 1.4L Portrait Datum in the Next Decade

For this 85L portrait lens, although the resolution is not the first. However, it must be said that the resolution performance of this kind of lens under large aperture often directly determines the usability of the lens.

We tested the resolution of this Canon's 85mm 1.4L by capturing a screenshot of 100% magnification. The camera used for the test is the highest pixel body 5DSR of Canon. As for the tripod, turn off all internal optimization and anti-shake, ISO 100, and the positions of the clipping center and edge are shown in the figure below.

Comments:

It can be seen that the resolution of Canon 85 1.4L is excellent at any aperture, and the resolution of the center or corner can be described as off the charts, which can be said to be all the time. In fact, the resolution difference between the maximum aperture and the optimal aperture of this lens is really tiny, and it hardly needs to be paid attention to in practical use.

Suggestions for use:

For a lens with such excellent performance, we actually don't need to recommend the best aperture range. Just say: Help yourself. Of course, it is common sense in the digital age not to use the aperture after F 16.

The benchmark distortion test of Canon 85 1.4L portrait in the next decade.

Generally speaking, the distortion performance of fixed-focus lens is not too bad, especially for lenses over 50 mm, but in order to further understand the characteristics of this lens, we still need to look at the distortion performance of this new 85L product. Red is a straight line for reference, black is a "straight line", 85 1.4L real shot.

It can be seen that Canon's 85mm 1.4L lens does have a slight pincushion distortion without opening the lens for correction. However, on the one hand, the distortion at this point is really slight, and on the other hand, the influence of distortion can be completely eliminated after opening the internal lens for correction. So we really don't have to worry too much about the distortion performance of this new 85 1.4L lens.

Canon 85 1.4L portrait benchmark dark angle test in the next decade.

Dark corner, or edge loss of light, can actually be solved perfectly by post-optimization or in-machine optimization in the era of digital photography. As long as it is not serious enough to affect the luminous flux, it is not the key to judge the quality of a lens.

However, in order to further understand the characteristics of this lens, we decided to take a look at the dark corner performance of this lens.

Turn off all lens calibration in the machine, and it is still a real shot test. Let's take a look at the dark angle characteristics of this lens.

It can be seen that the dark angle of Canon 85 1.4L is still obvious under large aperture. When it is reduced to F2.8, the aperture is obviously improved, but it is completely eliminated after the aperture F4.

When we use a large aperture lens, the flexible use of dark corners can sometimes really make photos more interesting. It is customary to keep dark corners when taking pictures, unless you encounter some scenes that require very high consistency of surrounding light, and then you can turn on the camera lens to correct it.

I. Dispersion of Canon 85 1.4L

Let's take a look at the dispersion performance of this 85 1.4L under different apertures by taking a real shot to enlarge the screenshot.

It can be seen that the dispersion of this 85 1.4L under large aperture, which is what we often call purple edge, is still not small. F 1.4 and F2 are more obvious when the aperture is fully open. When the aperture receives F2.8, it can be basically eliminated, and the other apertures have no dispersion.

It should be mentioned here that since 85mm 1.4L is positioned in portrait lens, the requirements for lens and Jiao Wai are naturally indispensable. However, in lens design, the control of dispersion often conflicts with the control of Jiao Wai and defocus. Therefore, in the digital age, manufacturers tend to accommodate scattered scenes and Jiao Wai first, and then solve the problem of dispersion through in-machine correction or post-processing, which is actually a common practice in the digital age.

Therefore, we suggest that you turn on the built-in correction as much as possible when using 85 1.4L, so as to get a better picture effect. After all, people were designed for consumers from the beginning.

Second, the focusing speed performance of Canon 851.4L.

Regarding the focusing speed of this lens, the author said that it still surprised me. I'm sure it won't fly fast, but at least it won't drag the fuselage back (I used 5DSR). Considering that this is a lens with an aperture of F 1.4, the focus itself is higher than that of ordinary lenses of F2.8 and F4, and this performance should be said to be satisfactory.

3. What is the anti-shake effect of Canon 85 1.4L?

Regarding anti-shake, this is definitely a person's feeling. I think the anti-shake function of this lens is not so much to prevent hand shock as to better cooperate with the high-pixel body. In practical use, a high-pixel body like 5DSR has no anti-shake of the body. If there is no anti-shake of the lens, the 85mm safety shutter will take about 1/200 seconds. With lens anti-shake, we can safely put the shutter on 1/60 seconds, as long as the model does not animate the face, it is completely OK.

Fourth, about shooting and the scene.

This will be mentioned later in the example section.

Canon 85 65438+ 0.4L real shot sample of portrait benchmark in the next decade

Finally, the old rule is sampling time. This time, the author filmed a female e-sports event in China. Many of these photos were taken in dim light indoors, so it is difficult for friends to take a clear camera lens at this time. Canon 85 1.4L can not only shoot, but also cut the girl out of the complex background. I have to say that a big aperture is justice!

When using ultra-shallow depth-of-field lenses such as 85 1.4, we must pay attention to the control of focus, and the focus must be on the eyes.

It can be seen from this sample that although the Jiao Wai spot of 85 1.4L is not very round, the bilinear control is still very good.

Finally, thank you, Miss Chengdu!
