Geospatial information technology, also known as "3S" technology, is composed of geographic information system (GIS), global positioning system (GPS) and remote sensing mapping technology (RS). It is also called one of the three international frontier fields of science and technology together with nanotechnology and biotechnology. Wuhan is the most knowledge-intensive area in the field of geospatial information in China, especially its navigation and location service technology, which is world-class and in a leading position in the country.

There are 19 academicians in the field of surveying and mapping geographic information in China, 10 academicians in the two academies in this field, and more than 300 experts in Wuhan. In the field of geospatial information, Wuhan has two national key laboratories, including the State Key Laboratory of Surveying and Mapping and Remote Sensing Information Engineering, four national engineering (technology) research centers, 20 provincial key laboratories, four provincial engineering (technology) research centers and more than a dozen related colleges, demonstrating the powerful strength of Wuhan in observing the sky and the earth. Among them, the State Key Laboratory of Surveying and Mapping Remote Sensing Information Engineering of Wuhan University is the only State Key Laboratory of Surveying and Mapping in China, and it is also one of the centers of basic theoretical research and applied basic research of surveying and mapping in China and even in the world, with outstanding professional advantages. Take the lead in developing large-scale spatial information system software with independent intellectual property rights such as GeoGlobe, MapGIS and PANDA, as well as data processing platforms such as DPGrid full digital photogrammetry system, 3D visual geographic information system and remote sensing image processing system, especially the agricultural remote sensing yield estimation information system developed based on MapGIS7.x platform, so as to realize the automation and high efficiency of relevant crop yield monitoring. The first laser deflection dynamic measuring vehicle in China was born. It has domestic leading integrated technology products such as global satellite navigation system precise positioning and orbit determination data processing system, mobile road measurement system, LD laser scanning measurement system, intelligent road detection system, true three-dimensional mobile measurement system and three-dimensional tilt photogrammetry system. The public version of the national geospatial information public service platform-sky map, Hubei public positioning service system, Wuhan "image city" map and other systems have been built.

Wuhan is an important town of satellite navigation industry and geospatial information industry in China, with remote sensing and telemetry, geographic information system and global positioning system as the leading industries.
