Geospatial information technology, also known as "3S" technology, is composed of geographic information system (GIS), global positioning system (GPS) and remote sensing mapping technology (RS). It is also called one of the three international frontier fields of science and technology together with nanotechnology and biotechnology. In the field of geospatial information, Wuhan has two national key laboratories, including the State Key Laboratory of Surveying and Mapping and Remote Sensing Information Engineering, four national engineering (technology) research centers, 20 provincial key laboratories, four provincial engineering (technology) research centers and more than a dozen related colleges, demonstrating the powerful strength of Wuhan in observing the sky and the earth. Among them, the State Key Laboratory of Surveying and Mapping Remote Sensing Information Engineering of Wuhan University is the only State Key Laboratory of Surveying and Mapping in China, and it is also one of the centers of basic theoretical research and applied basic research of surveying and mapping in China and even in the world, with outstanding professional advantages.
