In Out of Africa, Watkin tried to give the film a soft color, which coincides with the rich romantic tone set by the director sydney pollack. Through constant practice, he used a night camera to shoot during the day, or vice versa, and achieved extremely ideal results. Some critics said: "His wide-angle and warm indoor photos help to create a' well-defined, slightly magical and perfect past'." Watkin often takes a nap on the set. He defended this habit, saying, "It's the only thing that won't make you too tired on the set."
