Shunji Iwai

Born on January 24, 1963 in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Shunji Iwai, who had a wide range of hobbies since childhood, fell in love with various art forms such as movies, art, and music during his student days. After graduating from Yokohama National University in 1987, he entered the Japanese television industry. In the following years, Iwai Shunji has been engaged in directing work for MTV, commercials and limited television programs. The large number of MTV and commercials shot during this period had an important impact on the image style of his future films.

In 1993, Shunji Iwai shot a children's TV short film "Fireworks" for Fuji TV's "IF..." series, which was generally well received. Due to Shunji Iwai's outstanding directing skills, the Japan Film Directors Association made an exception and named him the best new film director of the year. In 1994, Shunji Iwai's TV short "Bundle of Love" continued to receive rave reviews. Not only was it made into a film and released, it also won the NETPAC Award at the 1995 Berlin Film Festival.

In 1995, Shunji Iwai released his theatrical film debut "Love Letter". "Love Letter" first caused an unprecedented sensation in Japan with its fresh and touching story and bright and beautiful images, and its influence soon spread to the entire Southeast Asia and even Europe and the United States. Now, this beautiful and touching "Love Letter" has not only become the favorite of many Asian movie fans, but is also regarded by many film critics as one of the most important works in the Japanese New Cinema Movement.

The following year 1996 was also a creative year for Shunji Iwai. First, his short film "Dream Traveler" about mental patients won the Journalist Jury Award at the Berlin Film Festival. Then he worked non-stop to adapt his second novel "Swallowtail Butterfly" to the screen. The profound theme, complex storyline, huge investment of five million US dollars and the joining of many stars make "Swallowtail Butterfly" the most shocking film by Iwai Shunji to date.
