School nickname: Worcester Institute of Technology, engineer, was founded in 1865 by two outstanding Worcester industrialists, John Boynton and ichabod washburne, as a free college of industrial science in Worcester County. He was also supported by Stephen Salisbury II, Emory washburne, George Frisbie Hall, Philip Mohn, Seth Sweetser, david wheater Come and Charles O Thompson.
Boynton advocated teaching basic science, while washburne emphasized cultivating students' language ability. Their cooperation established the basic educational concept of "theory and practice" in universities. Stephen Salisbury II provided a lot of financial support for the school. He was an influential businessman and later became the first chairman of the school board. Unfortunately, Mr. Boynton died before the first class in 1868 school, and washburne died soon after. However, their contributions to the establishment of WPI are remembered, and two original teaching buildings are named after them to commemorate them. The early development of WPI is attributed to Charles O. Thompson, a chemistry professor at WPI. Mr. Thompson was an early graduate of WPI, and later became a famous mechanical and civil engineer, as well as an artist and banker. At the beginning of the 20th century, WPI gradually developed in campus and discipline construction, forming graduate education and electronic engineering education programs. During World War II, WPI offered national defense engineering courses, and was selected as a university to guide the training courses of the U.S. V- 12 Naval Military Academy. But at this time, WPI is experiencing the lack of three major resources, one is a single library system, the other is good teaching facilities, and the third is national recognition. From 1962 to 1969, under the leadership of President Harry Stock, this situation was finally reversed.
President Stoke has brought great changes to the school, which is called "WPI Plan" in history. The plan led to three major engineering reforms and the redesign of the curriculum structure. The movement initiated by Stoke and his management will be beneficial to the establishment of George Library, new dormitory, gymnasium and modern chemistry education building. Later1February, 968, women were allowed to study in WPI. WPI plan is still the guiding ideology of WPI undergraduate teaching. This is undoubtedly WPI's most famous contribution to academia and industry.
Today, WPI still focuses on undergraduate education. Of course, the development of graduate students and graduate schools is also a long-term goal. WPI Bioengineering Center is an important contribution organization to the development of local biotechnology, which promotes the development of the biotechnology industry in Worcester.
Other scientific and technological research laid the background of WPI research university. WPI is located in Worcester, the second largest city in New England. The main campus is an open campus, but its roads are private. None of the public roads enter the campus. WPI was built on Boynton Hill, separated from the surrounding restaurants and shops. "Skull Tomb" is the electromagnetic wave laboratory before WPI, all made of nonmetal. After several years of construction, the construction of Worcester tram had to be stopped. He used to be the research center of rocket fuel, the father of rocket, because it was far from other teaching buildings. Prior to this, the "father of the rocket" had caused an explosion in the main campus. Therefore, "Skull Tomb" got its name. "skull and bones" is the secret honor organization of the school. Only honorary students of the school can join and inherit the property of this "skull tomb". In 2004, the "skull tomb" was restored. It has three floors and three doors at the entrance, which makes it more mysterious. The twin towers on the WPI emblem have a bell tower in Boynton Hall, a hammer arm and a weathervane. This weather vane was stolen on1October 1975, and its whereabouts are unknown. Boynton and washburne are the first two teaching buildings of WPI, and the twin towers symbolize the teaching concept of paying equal attention to theory and practice.
WPI's logo colors, purplish red and gray, are inspired by the colors of Boynton Mountain and Zhou Shu. 1945 The beech tree planted still stands on the mountain.
On the edge of WPI campus is a Tudor mansion built by alumnus Aldus Chapin Higgins in 192 1 and presented to his alma mater. It was named Higgins House. At present, Higgins Tower and its English Garden are used as alumni activity areas and offices of alumni relations offices. The life of students in Worcester Institute of Technology is very rich. There are more than 100 clubs, such as ballet club, photography club, ski club, chess club, rock climbing club, fight club, golf club and swimming club. Students are sure to find a club that suits them. There are bookstores, banks, cafes and so on in the campus. The school has also set up employment counseling offices, religious belief offices and student health care offices, which not only provide good teaching activities, but also care for students in their lives.
School facilities: 2 main teaching buildings, 1 teaching building, library, Reid Art Museum, Andean Performing Arts Center, Nelson Wheeler Library, Chelner Student Center, recreation room, club, post office and shop;
Sports facilities: football, rugby, water polo, basketball, swimming, wrestling, hockey, baseball, golf, tennis, softball, track, volleyball and skating; WPI offers a variety of majors at undergraduate and graduate levels, including engineering, science, management, humanities and social sciences. The most famous is its engineering education, which has the best engineering education in North America and even the whole world.
WPI's undergraduate teaching time plan is different from most similar colleges and universities, and it is different from the ordinary two-semester system. WPI adopts the seven-four-semester system. A-D semester. Students can also choose summer e-term. The term usually begins on the last Thursday in August and ends on the first Tuesday in May. The teaching content of each semester is similar to that of other similar institutions 1/3 academic year. Therefore, such a compact study increases the difficulty and pressure of students' study, but at the same time it also occupies the time for students to practice projects. In addition, graduate students still adopt the traditional two-semester system.
The grading standards are A, B, C b and C. If students can't complete a course well, they can apply for "no record" and their grades will not appear on the report card. The purpose of this standard is to encourage engineering students to challenge themselves, and don't give up the opportunity to challenge themselves because they are worried about the impact of their scores. In order to obtain a bachelor's degree certificate from WPI, students must complete the following (IQP, MQP, Humanities) projects.
Global Vision Project WPI (GPP) puts forward that practical ability is the most important requirement for solving scientific and social problems. Therefore, WPI requires students to complete an important project on a global scale, which is an important part of discipline construction. Through this project, more than 60% WPI students have completed at least one project in the off-campus project center. Generally speaking, under the leadership of college professors, students will solve a problem in the off-campus project center in the form of small project teams, which are generally proposed by non-school companies and organizations.
Through global projects, WPI has sent more engineering students than other American universities. Based on the data of 20/2009-20 10/0, the IQP (described in detail later) off-campus project centers established by WPI include Worcester, Boston, South Tackett, Washington, D.C., Santa Fe, New Mexico, San Juan, Puerto Rico, San Jose, Costa Rica, Denmark, London, Copenhagen, Venice and Windhoek, England.
The MQP (mentioned later) off-campus project centers established by WPI include: Lincoln Laboratory of Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Wall Street, Silicon Valley, new york, California, Edmonton, Alberta; Irish limerick, Nancy, French, Budapest, Hungarian, Wuhan, People's Republic of China (PRC) (China). From 65438 to 0974, when the first WPI project center was established in Washington, D.C., by 2006, more than 7,000 students had completed more than 2,000 projects around the world.
Remarks: Among the application conditions, the undergraduate IELTS score is 6.5; Requirements for IELTS scores of graduate students: 7.0 (no less than 6.5 for individual scores). The humanities program, also known as superficiality, aims to improve students' ability outside the field of science and technology. This project requires students to complete five subject-related courses such as western literature and music creation, and complete an independent research project. This independent project covers a wide range. Recently, students like to do topics such as modern music history, an independent flute playing, an original script, philosophical criticism and so on. Of course, for students who want to learn a second or more languages, they can skip the humanities and take language courses instead. Students majoring in humanities and arts need to complete a project related to engineering technology.
Since the 20th11session, the specific requirements of the school board for humanities topics have changed. For details, please consult WPI official website or your academic tutor. The English full name is Major Qualifying Project, which aims to evaluate students' ability in this major. This topic is similar to the "graduation project" of other universities, which requires students to design and study independently. MQP is usually funded by schools or external companies. Recently, excellent MQP projects completed by students include: life support system model of Mir space station, research on ADHD caused by mental stress and nicotine, research on rocket design, viscoelastic cell movement model, experimental research on liquid crystal using atomic force microscope, and delivery design of polymer drugs.
