Is the prime meridian a longitude of 0 degrees?

The longitude of the prime meridian is 0 degrees.

Primitive meridian, also known as "first meridian" or "zero meridian", refers to the meridian connecting the north and south poles on the earth and passing through the original site of Greenwich Observatory in London, England.

The meridian of the prime meridian represents the north-south direction, all the meridians are equal in length, and the degrees marked by the meridians are longitude. From the prime meridian, the geographical longitude is measured to the east and west respectively, ranging from 0 to 180.

The prime meridian is the zero meridian on the earth and the standard reference meridian used to determine the longitude of the earth and the global time. Unlike latitude, it has a natural starting point-the equator.

The prime meridian starts from the North Pole, passes through Britain, France, Spain, Algeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo and Ghana, and then reaches the South Pole. More than two thirds of ships use this line as the reference meridian.

Function of prime meridian

The former site of Greenwich Observatory later became the astronomical station of the British Maritime Department and the National Maritime Museum. The astronomical instruments used in the early days, especially the copper wire embedded in the ground in the meridian hall -0 meridian, are displayed here, attracting tourists from all over the world. Tourists here like to take pictures with their feet on both sides of the 0 meridian, which symbolizes stepping on the east longitude and the west longitude at the same time.

1950 After the Royal Observatory moved to its new site, it was placed under the National Ocean Museum, with astronomical stations and instruments, which were mainly used for exhibitions. Among the astronomical historical materials on display, there are early astronomical telescopes, clocks, globes and armillary spheres designed by early countries, many of which were made in China at that time, and many astronomical phenomena were discovered (such as Halley's Comet).
