Deep house: a designer under 35 years old, thinking of returning to the garden.

Reminder: This article is full of pictures. Estimated reading time: 8 minutes.

The self-report of a designer under the age of 35: "Born in Lanzhou, a small town in the northwest and an immigrant city in the west, there are both wild folk customs in the west and the cultural atmosphere brought by a wave of intellectual immigrants, both" literary "and" wild "growth environment. The influence of the growing environment on me is that I am wild and tough inside, but at the same time I am extremely sensitive to literary things. Like anything else, the reason for doing architecture is to feel "energetic". I don't like following the rules very much, and architecture is one of the things that can bring me this sense of "energy". "

The project base is located in the south of China, and it is also the place where the traditional gardens of China are bred. Architects hope that this design can respond to the modern architectural technology and the comfort of life, and how to meet the spiritual needs of traditional China people, that is, to love mountains and rivers and live in seclusion.

Therefore, in the already long and narrow base, architects lengthen the streamline, sight and time through the turning and progression of space, and finally the spatial sequence forms the result of deep house and deep garden.

The prototype of the building comes from the "Pavilion" in the traditional garden buildings in China, and the building structure adopts steel structure, which, like the wooden structure in the traditional buildings in China, is a member stress system. The huge overhanging roof blends the boundary of the building with the courtyard. In the end, the whole courtyard presents three levels: deep, deep and residential.

▽ Architectural panorama

Foreword-the first "deep"

Jiangnan has a tradition of gardening, which is different from traditional gardens. Now the owner is no longer a scholar who cares about mountains and rivers, but a modern man who is always cooperating with society. The demand for gardens is no longer a scenic tour, but a physical retreat. "Returning to rural homes" needs a place carrier that can connect the current reality with traditional feelings.

▽ Architectural appearance, hidden in the countryside.

This base is located in a typical rural corner of Jiangnan Plain. Due to the need of farming, the flat land is divided into rectangular grids elongated from north to south. The "Deep House" is located in one of the grids, bounded by the canal on the east and west sides, and adjacent to the country road on the south side, which is the main entrance. The biggest feature of the base is its depth. The space scene of "deep courtyard" also appeared in the base itself.

The base is located in a corner of the country with a deep depth.

Pattern-the second "depth"

In the specific site planning, the starting point of thinking is not how to place the "reality" of building volume, but how to organize the "virtual". "Empty" is not only a scene, but also a function, a courtyard and a building. "Space" is the basic unit of venue organization. According to the use requirements, different "spaces" are arranged in the base, and then the inner and outer boundaries are defined in each "space". Finally, we sorted out four buildings and ten courtyards with different shapes and sizes.

General plan

Four building blocks

The second floor, centered on the central pond, is a friend's private space. Separated from the previous layer by a T-shaped hole. A wooden grille is hollowed out in the upper part of the T-shaped hole, suggesting the lintel of the structure. On this floor, a transparent "pavilion" is arranged by the water, connecting the garden with the courtyard and the front hall. The longitudinally extending wall is also arranged on this floor to separate the private space of the guest room courtyard.

▽ Private meeting space centered on the pond

The third floor is the venue for people's activities and the back garden, and a small basketball court is arranged according to the owner's hobby. Three levels, promoted layer by layer, finally formed the result of a deep house and garden.

The deepest back garden

Line of sight-the third "depth"

The boundaries between courtyards are blurred, and the space of courtyards is zigzag, either hidden or infiltrated, or open or separated. In the process of visiting the park, the line of sight keeps turning, but every stop can catch a glimpse of the looming scene in front of the space, and the eyes drive the footsteps to explore. Originally a rectangular base, because of the tortuous space pulling, the whole spatial sequence is further deepened, which is the third "depth".

The zigzag space brings a deeper visual experience.

In gardens, the form of architecture is not the key. Because the architectural logic in traditional gardens is very simple: use the most common architectural system and the most suitable functional volume to make it appear in the most suitable position. And gave them different names: Pavilion, Taiwan, Pavilion and Pavilion.

In the "deep house", the boundary and location of the building have been decided by the garden, and the remaining problem is: "coverage". The structural system of ancient buildings in China is completely distinct, and the beams and columns are just to set off the roof truss, that is, to complete the coverage; The wall only separates the space and does not participate in the supporting role at all.

Considering that it is warm and rainy in the south of the Yangtze River, people spend more time walking and staying outdoors than indoors. The external covering of a building-eaves is particularly important. The roof is a meticulous shelter for people. They avoid rain but not steam, shade but not wind. In the design, I hope this kind of coverage can be light and invisible. Therefore, the architectural posture is sheltered in the garden with "far-reaching" overhangs.

▽ Large overhangs and glass walls make the building light and invisible.

▽ Interior classical furniture contrasts with modern architectural structure.

You can enjoy the rural scenery through the huge glass wall.

In order to distinguish between covering and separation, the functional volume adopts brick-concrete structure and the roof adopts steel-wood structure. The roof of the building is made up of two thin plates, and the overlapping part forms a high window facing north to increase ventilation and lighting.

The ultimate of vision must be the accuracy of structure. In order to make the cantilevered roof look surprisingly light, special design has been made in structure and construction, so that the roof is light enough without sacrificing heat preservation.

Water area layout

The water garden used to be a small fish pond behind the old house. After reconstruction and expansion, it has been connected with the East Canal. The only thing in the whole garden without a fence is the water in the east. Traditional gardens are introverted and closed, with clear boundaries. The "deep house" in the countryside needs to breathe with each other. Breathing of water system, breathing of sight, breathing of breath.

Before the renovation of the water park

▽ After the transformation of the water park,

There is no downpipe on the big roof of the building, but a gap is made in the local green slate on the ground to expose pebbles. When it is sunny, it is not noticed. On rainy days, the rainwater flows down from the preset drain and falls into the crack covered with pebbles, which becomes a line. The roof and the ground are connected by gravity and water in a soft way.

path

We have long been accustomed to the straight and flat road brought by modernization, and have forgotten the deep and shallow, looming mountain road. Actually, the path is directly related to the body. It is driven by eyes and touched by feet. It is the contact surface between man and the earth. The road is trodden out with the feet, so we should go back to the foot scale. If the road is trodden with your feet, you need to modify the path you set foot on so as not to get muddy. Garden itself is a domesticated nature, with equal emphasis on literature and quality, literature and quality, and nature and decoration. Perhaps there is not such a clear boundary.

Grass, gravel and bricks combine to form a natural path.

Over the mountains

The ancient people's gardening is to create an ideal habitat in their hearts, which is the physical realization from literature (poetry) to image (landscape painting) to garden. So, the same question "What is the ideal place for modern people to live"? It has always been the core clue of the whole design process of Deep House. However, until the completion, I still can't sum up an unspeakable answer.

It was not until a few years after its completion that I came across the literati painting "Dongshan Silk and Bamboo Map" in the Yuan Dynasty, and suddenly found that in the dark, this picture drawn by the ancients as early as 700 years ago actually had a subtle influence on modern practice. In painting, the spatial structure, narrative elements and even the prototype of architecture are almost one-to-one.

The agreement between architecture and ancient gardens

Modern people can't do gardens like the ancients, and the reality of life has almost changed. So what is the ideal residence of contemporary China people? We know "skyscrapers", we know "garden villas", we know "returning to the garden" and we know "facing the sea". However, it may be an unconscious return when the ideal place jumped out of the subconscious mind and was hidden in the picture of nearly a thousand years.
