Tangshan (Chinese: Tangshan; Pinyin: tángsān shì) is a prefecture-level city in Hebei Province, People's Republic of China (PRC), which is mainly industrial. It was known after 1976 Tangshan earthquake, which leveled the city with a magnitude of 7.5 on the Richter scale. The city has been rebuilt and has become a tourist attraction.

Tangshan has a history of more than one hundred years. Its name comes from the big cities and mountains in the city.
1At 3: 42 am on July 28th, 976, an instantaneous earthquake of magnitude 8.2 (officially reported as magnitude 7.8) occurred in Tangshan, causing heavy casualties. The official death toll is 255,000, but many experts believe that the actual death toll is two to three times this figure, which is the most destructive earthquake in modern history. Because of the earthquake, most of the town had to be rebuilt.

Tangshan is an important heavy industry city in northern China. Its manufacturing industry includes machinery, automobiles, chemicals, textiles, glass, petroleum products and cement. Since the late Qing Dynasty, it has been a coal mining center, because Guangdong businessman Tang Qingsheng opened the first coal mine in Kaiping in 1877 by using modern technology. [1]. With the construction of Caofeidian project, it started large-scale steel works, chemical projects and power projects. Tangshan is also called "the northern porcelain capital of China".

During the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, Tangshan was an isolated bamboo country, belonging to the northern post-country. The story of Boyi and Shu Qi has been passed down to this day.
During the Warring States Period, Tangshan was under the jurisdiction of the Yan State, and from the Qin and Han Dynasties to the Southern and Northern Dynasties, it was the territory of Youbeiping County and Liaoxi County, and was later placed under Youzhou. The eastern part of Tangshan area belongs to Beiping County from Sui Dynasty to now, and it is the outpost of Tang Dynasty's enterprising Liaodong expedition to Koguryo. After that, the Liao Dynasty ruled Tangshan for nearly 2 10 years, and then it was the territory of the Jin Dynasty. In the Ming Dynasty, Tangshan smelted iron and coal and became the center of ceramic industry.
1876, the Qing government built mines and coal mines in Kaiping town and set up Qiaotun town. 1899 Qiaotun Town is named Tangshan Town because there is Tangshan (now Dacheng Mountain) in the north of the town, which belongs to Luanzhou. Tangshan is the cradle of emerging industries in China. 1877, in the 20th century, China's first railway Tang Xu Railway (Tangshan-Xugezhuang Railway), the first modern coal mine Kailuan Coal Mine, the first refractory factory and the first cement factory were built in Tangshan. Tangshan is the northern porcelain capital of China and the largest production base of sanitary ceramics and industrial ceramics in China. Kailuan coal mine is the coal mine with the largest coking coal output.

Shanhaiguan Beiyang Railway Institute was founded in Shanhaiguan in 1896 and moved to Tangshan in 1905. It is one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in China and the source of higher education in civil engineering and traffic engineering in China. It was named Tangshan Jiaotong University and Tangshan Institute of Technology of China Jiaotong University. 1952, after the adjustment of the national department, it was renamed Tangshan Railway Institute. The college headquarters was moved to Emei, Sichuan on 1972 and renamed Southwest Jiaotong University. The main entrance of Xipu Campus of Southwest Jiaotong University, which was opened in 2004, is the original school gate of Tangshan Jiaotong University and was built by Tangshan Municipal Government. On the front of the school gate is the word "Jiaotong University" and on the back is the word "Tangshan Road Mining School".
