What is "hypo"?

Hypo and soda are common names for sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate. Sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate is a colorless monoclinic crystal. Dissolved in self-crystallization water at 48.2℃; Weathering easily in dry air above 33℃; Soluble in water absorbs heat.

It is well known that hypo is used as a fixative in photography. The ionic equation of the reaction is as follows: CN-+s2o 32-SCN-+SO32- Oral cyanide poisoning cases can be gastric lavage with 50 ~ 10% sodium thiosulfate solution, and cyanide ion CN- is converted into thiocyanate ion SCN-.

Haibo is used as dechlorination agent in textile and paper industry. People use chlorine (or chlorine bleach) to bleach fabrics and pulp. It is necessary to remove residual chlorine after bleaching. This can be achieved by using an aqueous solution of hypo: 4cl2+S2O3 2-+5h2o-8cl-+2so4 2-+10h+,and then washing off the generated acid with clean water.

In analytical chemistry, sodium thiosulfate is used to prepare the standard solution for iodine titration. The reaction between them is rapid and complete: the reaction takes starch solution as indicator. 2S2O3 2-+I2-S4 O62- (tetrasulfate) +2I-

The application of the above hypo takes advantage of the moderate reduction or strong complexing (coordination) ability of thiosulfate ions. In addition, hypo is also used to treat some skin diseases.
