On the Artistic Style of the Fifth Generation Directors

The "fifth generation directors" refer to 1982 directors who graduated from Beijing Film Academy (later extended to the departments of photography and fine arts), including Jun-Zhao Zheng, Chen Kaige, Tian Zhuangzhuang, Zhang Yimou, Zhang Jianya and Huang Jianxin. Among them, 1983 Jun-Zhao Zheng's One and Eight was the first to raise the flag in Guichang, which had a great influence. Subsequently, Chen Kaige successively filmed the Yellow Land (1984), the military parade (1986) and king of the children (1987), and Tian Zhuangzhuang filmed the hunting ground Zasa (1985) and the horse thief (1985).

1989, Zhang Yimou produced the first film "Red Sorghum", which stunned audiences and critics at home and abroad. At this point, the fifth generation film has come to an end.

The main representatives of the "fifth generation directors" are Chen Kaige, Zhang Yimou, Wu Ziniu, Tian Zhuangzhuang and Huang Jianxin.
